πΊοΈ This summer we are on expedition! A treasure hunt that started with an old map!
An 1866 map of the western part of Saratoga County turned up at the studio with a curious marking β a stoneware factory, just a few miles north of where our studio is now!
People tend to curse "Charlton's clay" lying in the fields and under lawns and gardens, but we hadn't thought about how important that clay used to be and what we can MAKE with it now! πΊ
πͺ£ We've started digging!
π½ Asking farmers. Old maps. Land deeds. Preserved crocks. Oral histories of local clay deposits used for brick making and a family of potters who built a thriving stoneware business in the town of Galway, NY in the mid 1800s. We've even pulled in a Geology professor from Union College!
π Check out what we've learned so far & register on our website to join the crew!
β‘οΈ Help us dig and make β it's free!
