Anselm Reyle finds inspiration where others stop looking.
His sculptural vases draw on Fat Lava, the post-war West German ceramic style that became popular in the 1960s and 1970s, known for its thick volcanic glazes, vivid colours and heavily textured surfaces. Later dismissed as kitsch, these ceramics fascinated Reyle precisely because their excessive colours and textures can be both seductive and unsettling, a contrast that runs throughout his work.
By enlarging, fracturing and sometimes illuminating these forms with neon, Reyle transforms familiar decorative objects into monumental contemporary sculptures.
