Meet the Animals of the Woodland Trail

From bobcats to badgers, the Woodland Trail in CALM Zoo's Master Plan will showcase some of California’s remarkable native wildlife. The area will feature modernized habitats for smaller resident animals, including North American Porcupine, gray foxes and bobcats, giving guests new opportunities to see and learn about these incredible species.
Designed with adventure education in mind, the trail will incorporate unique play features into the landscape, creating an experience where families can explore, discover and connect with California wildlife.

The Woodland Trail will bring a new perspective to the Legacy Campus, highlighting the animals who make CALM Zoo such a special place to learn about wildlife.

Ever wonder what Laurel sees?

Mountain lions have excellent vision, especially in low light. Their eyes contain more light sensitive cells than human eyes, helping them see at dawn, dusk, and even at night. They also have a reflective layer behind the retina which helps maximize available light and is responsible for that familiar eyeshine you may notice in the dark.

These adaptations give mountain lions an advantage when navigating and hunting during the hours when many of their prey are most active.

Did you know CALM Zoo’s desert bighorn sheep are part of a Species Survival Plan? A Species Survival Plan, or SSP, is a cooperative effort among zoos to support the long-term health, genetic diversity, and conservation of species. Through this program, zoos work together to ensure healthy populations for generations to come.

With the CALM Zoo Master Plan, the bighorn sheep will gain an expanded habitat designed to give them more space while offering new opportunities for guests to see these animals up close. It will create a more engaging experience for both the animals and the people who come to learn about them.

That is what the CALM Zoo Master Plan is for: creating better spaces for our current and future animal residents while providing new opportunities for our community to learn, connect, and experience California’s native wildlife for generations to come. We’re saying goodbye to a very special member of the CALM Zoo family, Carla, one of our ringtails.

Carla arrived at CALM Zoo in 2013 alongside Camille from another facility. Both girls were part of the Ringtail Species Survival Plan, helping support the care and conservation of their species. Carla was naturally shy and spent much of her life keeping to herself, but in recent years, keeper Jasmin began working with her through relationship building and training.

With patience and consistency, Carla became more confident and comfortable coming out of her hide for crating and scale training. It was wonderful to see her grow more at ease with her keepers and the people around her.

Carla was 15 years old when she passed and had retired from the SSP due to her age. She was incredibly loved by her care team and will be greatly missed by everyone at CALM Zoo.

Our animal keepers are watching Camille closely, and we’re happy to share that she is doing well. The socialization and relationship building keeper Jasmin worked on with both girls has given Camille a strong foundation to help her navigate this change, and we’re happy to see her doing well.

If you have more fish than you can use, consider donating it to the animals at CALM Zoo. Your donation helps provide nutritious food and enrichment for Cinnamon, Louie and other animals in our care. Here’s what we need:

🐟 Fish caught within the last year
🐟 Fish that has never been previously frozen
🐟 Store bought frozen fish or shrimp

Animal care is at the heart of everything we do at CALM Zoo. Our veterinary team recently completed wellness exams on several of our resident desert tortoises as part of their routine health care. Regular veterinary exams allow our team to monitor each animal’s health, identify any potential concerns early, and support their continued health and well-being.

Sheldon, seen in these photos, was a great patient during his exam! We’re proud of the dedicated care our veterinary and animal keepers provide to our animals every day.

Scruggs, our North American badger, is a familiar face at CALM Zoo, and we’re excited that his future includes a new and larger habitat as part of CALM Zoo’s Master Plan.

As the Legacy Campus is reimagined, Scruggs will become part of the Woodland Trail, where his new habitat will give him more space to explore, dig, and display the natural behaviors that make badgers so unique.

The Woodland Trail is one of the many ways CALM Zoo’s Master Plan will bring meaningful updates to habitats throughout the Legacy Campus while keeping the places and animals our community knows and loves at the heart of the Zoo. Learn more about our Master Plan by visiting calmzoo.org
