The Famoso Dragstrip is located north of Bakersfield, California, and is known historically as the home to the annual March Meet, also known as the U.S. The strip, located on Famoso Road between Highway 99 and Highway 65 east of the Highway 99 and Highway 46 interchange, was originally built in World War II as an auxiliary training base for the nearby Army Air Corps training base at Shafter's Mint

er Field. It was in the 1950's that an aspiring group of drag racing pioneers from the Bakersfield area, the Bakersfield Smokers, purchased the strip and made the necessary adjustments to allow for drag racing. The Famoso Dragstrip hosted the first ever March Meet in 1959 and it helped establish the fledgling National Hot Rod Association's (NHRA) legitimacy.

TOM MACHT RECAP: LOCKED-IN ROUND 3 DELIVERS UNDER THE LIGHTS AT FAMOSO

The LOCKED-IN Drag Racing Series returned to Famoso Dragstrip for Round 3, wrapping up a two-day weekend that began with Friday testing before turning up the intensity for Saturday night’s competition.

With the Famoso racing surface ready for action, racers across a wide range of classes battled their way through the night before champions were crowned.

In Real Steel, Johnny Coleman drove his 1969 Camaro to the Round 3 victory over Eric Outland, while Travis Ga***rd came out on top in Outlaw Small Tire over David Del Guidice. James DiMaggio claimed the Outlaw 8.5 title.

Modern Muscle went to Eddie Rios and his 2015 Mustang, defeating Mike Co***lo in the final. In Truck, Israel Valenzuela took the win over Bakersfield racer Danny Crownover.

The index categories also produced a strong group of winners. Bakersfield’s Ron Noyes earned the 5.35 Index victory, Matt Flud captured 5.80 Index over Adam Dumke, and Bakersfield’s Jan Vanderpool took home the 6.50 Index win over Tony DeAzevedo.

Herk Usrey captured Bracket No Box with a final-round victory over John Carvalho, while Bakersfield’s Kamaka Pocock, known as the “Fly’n Hawaiian,” earned the Little Gangsta title with a final-round victory over Dan Dagata.

The California Independent Funny Car Association joined the LOCKED-IN program, with James Maher taking the CIFCA victory over Jim Maher.

On two wheels, Bakersfield’s Paul Silvas added another Famoso victory to his résumé, defeating David Ochoa for the Motorcycle championship.

From the opening test runs Friday to Saturday night’s final rounds, LOCKED-IN Round 3 brought another weekend of competition to Famoso Dragstrip, with everything from street-based machines and motorcycles to small-tire cars and Funny Cars taking their shot at the historic racing surface.

Round 3 is in the books—and another group of racers can officially say they left Famoso LOCKED-IN winners.

Win Lights and Tight Racing Put the Heat on ANRA Summer Nationals at Famoso

The ANRA Summer Nationals wrapped up Sunday at Famoso Dragstrip with win lights deciding the weekend after two days of racing in great weather and on a solid racing surface.

After Saturday’s qualifying set the ladders, Sunday belonged to the racers who could survive round after round and turn on the final win light.

In the Nostalgia Eliminator ranks, Mike Needham of Las Vegas captured the NE1 title over runner-up Randy Ferguson of La Habra Heights. Needham ran a 7.626 in the final to Ferguson’s 7.633.

Robert Johnson of Visalia finished the weekend on top in NE2, defeating Ted New of Shafter in the championship round. Johnson recorded an 8.613 while New ran an 8.592.

NE3 belonged to Saturday’s No. 1 qualifier Kevin White of Wildomar, who carried his qualifying success all the way through eliminations and defeated Douglas Holmes of Tehachapi in the final. White ran a 9.563 to Holmes’ 9.521.

The Gas classes produced a new set of winners after some of Saturday’s top qualifiers were knocked out during eliminations. Kamaka Pocock of Bakersfield took the A/Gas championship over fellow Bakersfield racer Kenzer Small, while Brent Handley of Exeter claimed the B/Gas title over Wayne Broughton of Washington.

In C/Gas, Justin Lynch of Whittier came away with the victory over Walt Clevett of Loomis. D/Gas saw Jerimie Jennings of Bakersfield work his way from the No. 17 qualifying position to the championship, defeating Anthony Byers of Paso Robles in the final.

Another Bakersfield racer found the winner’s circle in E/Gas as Gage Cameron defeated Mark Thompson of Lucerne Valley for the title.

Brad Thompson of Visalia took home the Sportsman championship over Allen Schoonmaker of Fresno, while Mike Brock captured Open Wheel with Saturday’s No. 1 qualifier Bob O’Neal of Rancho Cucamonga finishing runner-up.

The huge Hot Rod field came down to Jim Hulse of Porterville and Don Momi of Stockton. Hulse cut a .005 reaction time and ran an 11.560 to earn the championship, with Momi also leaving with a .005 light and running an 8.608 in the runner-up effort.
