Recently finished up a custom order for a live edge bar sign. The wood is a live edge plank that I milled with my Alaskan chainsaw mill from an American Linden tree log. The lettering was laid out by hand and burnt in with my wood burner.

Start to finish. Process of turning a rough chunk of Weeping Ornamental Cherry to the finished bowl. This one has interesting inclusions and curly grain. Each piece is like unwrapping a Christmas gift and discovering what is inside.

Happy 50th Earth Day! A couple of bowls from a gnarly chunk of Weeping Ornamental Cherry trunk. Most of what I use for my wood projects is salvaged wood, storm damaged trees or wood from trees taken down by other people. The electric company took this tree down in front of my father-in-law's house and the big gnarly trunk piece has sat in front of his house for over a year. I kept looking at it and wondered what the grain would look like with such a gnarly piece. Wasn't I pleasantly surprised when I got my chainsaw out and cut the piece up into bowl blanks over the weekend and saw what was inside. It is a mixture of curly grain, burl grain, characteristic Cherry wood inclusions and chaotic wavy wood grain. It is also very dense wood and turns nicely. I have about 12 more bowl blanks and can't wait to reveal what's inside the remainder.

Took a break for a couple of days and just figured out these two live edge Black Walnut bowls. The one with the rough bark and light colored sap wood was turned when it was green. The live edge without the bark was turned after the wood dried for a little over a year. Also nice to see the Bleeding Heart flowers in the spring. The shells in the garden bring good memories of a previous fun shark tooth and shell hunting trip at Calvert Cliffs, Maryland.

English Walnut. Thanks to a customer who connected me with their neighbor in Hershey that had two trees taken down. I never worked with English Walnut before and found it to have nice rich brown color with interesting grain coloration. The nice weather has also allowed me to share some of our spring flowers that I have been enjoying.

Monster mushrooms! These wooden mushrooms showed up in our flower garden last evening. The tops are Silver Maple and the stems are Ginko. Looking out my kitchen window this morning I had to chuckle when I spotted a curious squirrel jumping around the mushrooms. It was not quite sure if they were safe to approach and at one point I thought it was going to jump up on one of them. Before leaving it jumped onto the fence and hung over looking back at the mushrooms.

First Cherry wood bowl. Had to take advantage of the welcome sunny day and take pictures outside. I have turned some Cherry muddlers and spurtles and carved many spoons and spatulas, but this is the first bowl. I love the rich red color of Cherry wood which often darkens with age. The other thing that makes the local wild Cherry wood interesting are the unpredictable red inclusions that pop up unexpectantly and make peices unique. You can see some of those inclusions in the bottom of this bowl and smaller ones on the sides. This wood is from a friend's property near Wrightsville.

Firewood? We took a very large oak tree down last July at my father-in-law's house. Most of it we cut up and split for firewood. When looking at the stacked firewood I spotted a few pieces that had spalted. What is spalting? It is the black lines and spots in the wood resulting from the decay process of dead wood. The black lines often create squiggly lines and interesting patterns which are unpredictable as you cut into the wood. Spalted wood is one of my favorite to carve because it is like opening a Christmas present in that as you peel back the layers you discover what is inside. Which is often a great surprise.

Sharing my daily dose of wooden bowl. This one is black walnut from a friends property near Wrightsville. I centered the bowl across the sap wood and heartwood line to get a dramatic color change from side to side. This is a single piece of wood from a section of log.

Plywood bowl? A little experiment with stacked walnut plywood and a solid black walnut rim piece. This was an interesting piece to turn with the varying hardness of the layers of wood and the alternating directions of grain in the plywood.
