My client asked me to write a few words about what inspires me, to send with the piece. So I decided to make it part of my bio:
Inspiration has many meanings. First and foremost, there is an inner drive to paint the best painting of my generation every day, every painting. That’s the first “inspiration”, that’s beyond my control, but drives me. I cannot stop. I must paint. Regardless of the cost. Financial and relationships are impacted. But paint, i must.
A major part of it is also instinct. Like an athlete, I think about the preparation and honing my techniques through repetition and careful study. But when it’s time to step up to the plate, or canvas, I try not to think too much but just get into a trance and let my God-given talent take over. Like an athlete, when they swing or shoot, don’t think. And suddenly - it’s over - and I step away. Step back. Survey. And it’s done. Hit the showers. Or if not, maybe a break and then back to work. But much is talent from God = Instinct, as I actually apply the paint and create. The less I think, the better. Like when an athlete swings or shoots.
It’s also a battle of sorts for me - with the canvas. A struggle to get the paint to comply. I circle the canvas like an animal. I attack. I relent. Again, more paint. I massage. I manipulate. I tilt, I spin, I rinse, I pour, I drip. Until the painting is the painting and the war has been won. Then I love it as my own child.
Now, back to work.
