CW: school lock downs/ drills

I’m an art teacher in a public school and it’s lock down drill day, I’m sitting here remembering my what i believe was my first drill, I was in 1st grade. Our teachers talked to us beforehand about what would happen, where we would sit and what we would do. The next day the alarm when off, we sheltered I remember the floor was freezing, and an adult came and banged on the door asking for help and to be let in. My tiny heart broke thinking someone needed help and i couldn’t help them. As I’m now grown and sitting in my own classroom, thinking about where I’ll put kids, how i might block a door, break a window, escape, keep my students safe I’m livid thinking we’re still doing this. That it’s not different for these babies, that i should get them something to help them keep quiet…. All this work, all these thoughts and we could just change the laws for the FU***NG GUNS. It’s the fu***ng guns.
F**k off with the thoughts and prayers, we need action.

I feel like the more I listen to Defying Gravity the harder it hits, shaking off what you though you wanted, fighting to make a difference, feels extra relevant these days, no? And voice is balm for the soul.

That’s a wrap on the 24/25 school year! We laughed, we cried, I learned 200 new kids names, had some culture shock, learned to use the kiln, got covid for the first time 5 days into a new job, met new friends, advocated for myself and others, got a dreamy classroom… packed up said dreamy classroom. It was a rollercoaster of a year, and i am forever changed. Making art with kids is the best job.
