Studio Sales is pleased to present a 3-day wood firing workshop taught by our studio manager, Daisy Goldstein Cross. This workshop is designed to give participants a hands-on learning experience of atmospheric firing in a small group. Please email [email protected] to register or with any questions. Maximum of 9 spots available.
Daisy has been woodfiring for 6 years and has completed programs at The Cub Creek Foundation and The Oki Doki Studio, focusing on atmospheric firing techniques. She has also traveled to fire wood kilns with other artists across the East Coast and assisted Linda Christianson with her woodfiring class at Penland School of Craft last summer.
Upon registration, students will be asked to select 2, 25lb bags of cone 10 clay from several available varieties for pick up at Studio Sales.* Participants can purchase more clay from Studio Sales as needed throughout their making to reach their cubic footage allotment. For reference, a Standard clay box is ½ a cubic foot. Daisy will counsel each participant on successful forms and making for a wood firing. Participants are expected to bring their allotment of bisqued work to the studio on the 19th of November from 6-9pm to discuss and begin glazing.
On Saturday November 20th participants will arrive at Studio Sales at 10am to begin loading day. Daisy will help students finish glazing, discuss wadding and loading techniques. The group will then load the kiln together, with each person getting an opportunity to load their pots. This day will end when the kiln is fully loaded and the door is bricked up and ready for the firing. Participants will sign up for a shift at the kiln for the following day.
Sunday November 21st will be the firing day. Participants will work in groups of 3 to manage and stoke the kiln. Daisy will talk the group through the different phases of firing, listening to the kiln, and stoking with confidence. The firing day will conclude late in the evening with the addition of soda and closing up the kiln.
The group will reconvene on Wednesday November 25th to unload the kiln, discuss results, and clean the kiln!
