The launch of FROM HELL TO HEALTH – journeys through PTSD/PTSI
Co-edited by Randall Burks Sexton and Pamela Ellen Ferguson

The launch of FROM HELL TO HEALTH – journeys through PTSD/PTSI combined with an exhibit of artwork and books of contributors, including the works of our Artemist artists familiar to all of you from our previous exhibits. Trauma is the common theme, along with the healing power of art, writing, and community activism, reflected in all of these works.

FROM HELL TO HEALTH was co-edited by psychiatric nurse practitioner and veteran Randy Sexton of Fort Riley, Kansas, and multi-published author/teacher Pam Ferguson, both of whom have explored innovative ways of working with trauma survivors. Pam is also the co-founder of the Artemis group, together with Dr Kimberly Layne, DAOM, L.Ac, Dipl OM, and Annie McMillin, decorated Army Veteran and practicing artist. Described as a “non-therapy therapy group,” the Artemis Project was created to give women veterans a chance to share stories of trauma and art in a supportive, informal environment. Dr Layne also contributed to the anthology – see her chapter 18 in the section titled Military and Veterans.

We dedicate our launch and exhibit to Shirley Ann Riley, who is currently fighting for her life in a Florida hospital. And, as Shirley would insist, we also dedicate the event to active servicewomen and men recovering in U.S. Army hospitals in Europe and the Gulf.

Collective Art Exhibit Featuring:
Laura Babcock, Carol Gonzales, Juanita “Janie” Gotts, Brian Joseph, Denise Knebel, Shirley Ann Riley, Glenn Towery, and Ashley Schor.

Opening Reception
Saturday, April 18, 2026
6:00–8:00 PM

Exhibition Dates
April 18 – May 14, 2026

Borrowing its title from Emily Dickinson’s meditation on hope as “the thing with feathers,” this exhibition explores quiet, persistent forces that sustain life—often unseen, yet deeply felt. Through gesture, material, and rhythm, the works give form to what resists language.

Unfolding across five sections—Cosmos, Agua Santa, Patchwork, Beacons, and Airborne—the exhibition traces the energies of life, creation, and transformation.

Rita María Contreras is an award-winning painter based in San Antonio, Texas, whose process-driven abstractions in oil and cold wax explore themes of creation, life force, and the natural and spiritual world. Her work is held in public and private collections, including the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Exhibition Dates: April 18 – May 14, 2026

Borrowing its title from Emily Dickinson’s enduring meditation on hope as “the thing with feathers / that perches in the soul,” this exhibition considers the quiet, persistent forces that sustain life—often unseen, yet deeply felt. Like Dickinson’s bird that “sings the tune without the words, / and never stops at all,” the works gathered here move through gesture, material, and rhythm rather than fixed narrative, giving form to what resists language.

The exhibition unfolds in five interconnected sections—Cosmos, Agua Santa, Patchwork, Beacons, and Airborne—each exploring generative forces of life, energy, and creation.

Rita María Contreras is an award-winning painter based in San Antonio, Texas. Working from her home studio, surrounded by native landscape, she often incorporates natural pigments into her practice. Her work has evolved from large-scale landscapes and narrative self-portraits to intuitive, process-driven abstractions in oil and cold wax. These recent works meditate on creation, life force, and a deep sense of gratitude for both natural and spiritual worlds.

With a background in theater and dance, Contreras brings a lyrical and rhythmic sensibility to her visual practice. She has exhibited across media—including ceramics, installation, drawing, and painting—and continues to explore mixed media. After raising a family, she returned to formal studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she focused on oil painting, a medium whose rich color and historical depth resonate with her exploration of nature, culture, and the human spirit.

Her work is held in the permanent collections of the University of Texas at San Antonio, University Hospital, and numerous private collections.
