I’m premiering a new song right after Eliza Gilkyson, and right before a presentation by Dr. Sekou Franklin, an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) and author of “After the Rebellion: Black Youth, Social Movement Activism, and the Post-Civil Rights Generation”.
Other performers include Yo-Yo Ma, David Pulkingham, Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel, Danny Schmidt, Carrie Elkin, Mohammad Firoozi & Gurf Morlix.

"Can I Borrow Your Love" - Dave Madden
What does it mean to live in the Live Music Capital of the World when all the venues are closed? Austin-based musician Dave Madden attempts to answer that question through his new song called, “Can I Borrow Your Love” which premiered as the KUTX 98.9 Song of the Day.
This socially-distanced collaboration features a sprawling ensemble of creatives: a rhythm section, horn section, string quartet, background singers, audio engineers and dancers. In total, the project includes 21 local artists, all recorded from their own homes.
The music video is accompanied by a series of behind-the-scenes interviews hosted by Madden, in which he discusses life as a musician during COVID-19, providing a unique insight into the lives of artists as they are faced with the greatest challenge of their careers.

“All right, everyone. I know 2020 has been a hard year,” nods lead vocalist and songwriter Dave Madden as the drums begin a familiar beat, “But unfortunately, I’ve got some more bad news.”
The bad news is in fact the existence of Dave Madden’s new song: COVID Christmas. As the songs itself admits, “it’s a song that no one asked for, a song that no one needs”.
Featuring Austin vocalists Akina Adderley, Erin Ivey and BettySoo (dubbed “The Stocking Stuffers” for this holiday-themed project), COVID Christmas is a bright, boppy 1950s rock’n’roll sendup showcasing doo-wop background vocals and silvery electric guitars.
“I was listening to a recent interview with Jerry Seinfeld,” Says Madden. “He made the point that as a society, we’re going to need to find ways to laugh at the tragedy of what we’ve all just gone through. COVID Christmas is an attempt to take something truly horrible and try to find some sense of joy and laughter.”
Madden invites listeners to donate directly to his work via Venmo (), CashApp ($DaveMadden), PayPal or Zelle ([email protected]). A portion of all offerings will be donated to the World Health Organization COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund.
COVID Christmas is self-referential and self-deprecating. The song’s lyrics describe the singer’s agonizing realization that “some idiot’s going to write a song called ‘COVID Christmas’. After bemoaning what this inevitable kitsch would be about—for instance, how Frosty gets a fever and melts, and how Santa spreads the virus with his ‘Ho, Ho, Ho’s!’—the songwriter reluctantly comes to the conclusion that the idiot who’s going to write this song “might as well be me”.
“And that’s really how it happened,” shrugs Madden. “As a prolific songwriter, the thought of writing a ‘COVID Christmas’ song had occurred to me. I decided that it was a horrible, tacky idea. But then I started listing all the things that such a horrible, tacky song would be about, and suddenly, there it was: COVID Christmas, a song that no one asked for—not even the songwriter.”
A trio of female vocalists known as The Stocking Stuffers plays the role of the Greek chorus, commenting with a collective voice on the action. After it’s revealed that “Rudolph wears his mask below his bright red nose”, the trio cries out, “Oh, deer!” in three-part harmony.
“Every time the song gets to, ‘Sha doop, We’re sorry, Sha bop bop’, I lose it,” laughs BettySoo. Akina Adderley jokes, “This is cinematic, y’all. Is there an Oscar category for this?” “It would be big news if The Stocking Stuffers broke out on their own,” muses Erin Ivey.
The music video for COVID Christmas is a surreal mashup of boilerplate holiday scenery—pine trees, snow and twinkling lights—juxtaposed with giant floating coronavirus molecules. Digital video editing technology allowed for the illusion of six musicians all playing together in the same space. In reality, everyone recorded and filmed their parts from the safety of their own homes. Madden actually had green screens delivered to each singer via Amazon. “Leave it to Dave to push everyone to the next level,” says vocalist BettySoo.
