E Allen Fine Art

E Allen Fine Art I paint realistic birds and place them in abstract, expressive environments.

My work explores the tension and harmony between natural form and emotional space—each bird rendered with quiet precision, each background shaped by intuition and motion.

I’ve started working my way through Scott Christensen’s Adventure of Painting Signature Series and finally got to play with paint today. I’m pretty sure I was only supposed to paint the sky and learn to blend colors in the same value, but I’m a rebel. I went ahead and painted the whole reference photo. I really love working with gouache! 😍

Just FYI Austin area artists. We have a fellow artist doing a talk and book signing at Book People soon. Wish I was in town for this, so I’m passing this along.

POV: Pretending I have unlimited money to spend at the art fair. 💸 So much incredible talent at the Austin Affordable Art Fair this year! Which of these pieces would you claim for your living room? Let me know below! 👇

Piñon trees. They’ve been waiting right outside my door and yesterday I finally painted them. The weather was spectacular — the wind, less so. No umbrella meant squinting at my colors the whole time. I went ahead anyway. Some paintings teach you things whether you’re comfortable or not.

I finally made my first real plein air outing this spring — Duncan Park, right here in Austin. I'd been wanting to paint outdoors for years, took a wonderful online workshop with Julie Davis to prepare, and then set out one afternoon with my converted photography backpack and my new lightweight hiking gear.

I almost made it without incident. Almost. 😄

The full story — including what I forgot and what I discovered once I actually started painting — is on the blog now. And spoiler: Santa Fe is next. I can't wait.

We’re back in Santa Fe today! It was super dreary and hazy when we arrived in Santa Fe this afternoon, but we were treated to a really brilliant sunset just below the cloud cover this evening. Probably one of the more beautiful sunsets I’ve seen out here. There was actual magenta and purple in the sky! 🤯🤩

First post-Julie Davis Studio workshop landscape 🌿

I couldn’t resist jumping into a full composition after all the practice—this one is based on a photo I took last October in Santa Fe, right when the aspens were turning that incredible gold.

My plan is still to focus on lots of tree studies (those leaves aren’t going to paint themselves), but this felt like a necessary step. And honestly, I loved every minute of it.

Starting to feel more comfortable—and a little more confident—working in oils again, which feels really good.

Just finished The Painter’s Process by William F. Reese, and it really stayed with me. It’s not about technique as much as it is about learning to trust that quiet inner voice when you’re creating.

A lot of it felt like a reminder to slow down, let go of overthinking, and just respond to what’s in front of you—whether that’s a landscape, a bird, or just a feeling you’re trying to hold onto. The idea that painting is more of a conversation than something you control really hit home.

It made me think about how often doubt creeps in, and how important it is to keep showing up anyway… to stay honest, even when it’s uncomfortable.

Definitely one of those reads that doesn’t just teach you something—it shifts how you see your own process.

This painting brought me so much joy and now it's found its forever home! I'm always sad to see them go, but I'm excited for the next painting and seeing where this art journey takes me. A big shoutout to the new owner and to all of my collectors for your continued support. It means more to me than you'll ever know!

A quiet exchange, caught in a fleeting moment.

This piece was inspired by a video a friend shared—the way these birds seemed to acknowledge one another felt almost human. I knew I had to explore it in paint.

Nature doesn’t always offer perfect composition, so I allowed myself some freedom with form and value.

Cedar Waxwings have such soft elegance and those striking masked faces—I never get tired of them.
