This Sunday, three veterans of Austin’s countercultural heyday take the stage at Poddy Rules the World: Gilbert Shelton’s Underground Comix & Art to talk about the wonderfully strange and unusual days of Austin’s underground comix scene.

We are proud to have Danny Garrett, Guy Juke, and Kerry Awn this Sunday for this panel discussion (with moderator Texas historian Joe Nick Patoski!!).

Austin’s famed “poster boys” had more creative commentary and cartoonery than you could fit on a handbill. While building their legacies with concert posters and psychedelic art, Juke and Garrett also made their mark in the pages of Austin Stone. Kerry Awn co-created the underground comic Austintatious with Rick Turner and Tom Bauman.

Come learn about the strange and unusual world of underground comix with us at our exhibit that celebrates one of the brightest stars of texas comix history.

It is hard to believe but Jack JAXON Jackon departed this physical world 20 years ago today. He left behind his son, Sam, and wife, Tina, along with a host of friends who still miss him. The photo of him below was taken in his office in the 60s at the Avalon Ballroom where he acted as the first art director. Yep, he made the assignments of poster creation to the various artists. He himself designed a poster. Can you remember which one? There's a clue on the wall behind Jack.

Artist and writer Jack Jackson (a.k.a. “Jaxon”) first gained notoriety as an underground cartoonist. Part of the wild bunch that produced the University of Texas humor magazine The Texas Ranger, he is generally credited with having created the first underground comic, God Nose, co-founded Rip Off Press, one of the first independent publishers of underground comics and was art director for the famous poster art group Family Dog. Today he is more widely known as a cartoonist-historian specializing in the history of his native Texas. His books include Comanche Moon, Los Tejanos, The Secret of San Saba, Indian Lover: Sam Houston & the Cherokees, Lost Cause, the story of John Wesley Harding, and perhaps his most controversial book, The Alamo.

Jackson was born in 1941 in Pandora, Texas. His Texas roots trace to his great-great-grandfather, who settled during the Republic years of 1836–1845. Indian blood in the family is limited to “some Choctaw, very remotely. I’ve often wondered why I have such a strong spiritual tie with the American Indians,” Jackson says. “I think it all started when I was a kid, growing up in the country, being fascinated with the land and finding in my childhood explorations reminders that people had been there before."

Jack Jackson received numerous awards in recognition of his historical work, including a lifetime fellowship of the Texas State Historical Association.

Huge thanks to everyone who came out to help us celebrate Gilbert Shelton and the opening of a really great exhibit that runs thru July 19. So many old and new friends being there made the day a real success. The first of 6 panel discussions got things going with background of the exhibit- covering a lot of ground. Dr. Jason Mellard acted as moderator, joined by archivist Katie Salzman and our director Leea Mechling. 3 of the Hub City Movers were there: Ed Vizard, Charlie Sauer and Jimmie Dale Gilmore and they talked a bit about recording Gilbert's Song Set Your Chickens Free.
Pictured here is Terry Raines- printer of the Vulcan Gas Company handbills, standing in front of the sign Gilbert painted for the Vulcan..BUT WAIT, THERE'S M O R E. In case you missed it, we are collaborating with Gilbert's nephew, Gavin, and he brought ORIGINAL drawings of selected comix that havent been seen by the public. Come see the show Monday thru Saturday 10am to 5pm (free) and on Sundays 1pm to 5pm (ticketed). 506 Congress Avenue.
