Amanda Lee Jones Art Studio Offering private and semi-private drawing, painting and sculpting classes in Austin for children ages 8-18.

Amanda teaches drawing and oil painting in a relaxed and kid-friendly atelier style. She combines her training in education with her training in art to deliver sophisticated ideas and techniques in a format children can understand. Classes are designed for students who have a passion for art and have expressed the desire to draw and/or paint representationally.

Maya, aged 16, with her original Vanitas oil painting. I love how she captured the glow of the candle flame throughout the still life. Maya arranged this composition using objects from my studio that fit within the symbolism of the Dutch Vanitas genre. Then we lit the candle and turned off the lights. She took some photos and worked from those since it’s tricky to paint in the dark. This is one of 10 artworks she developed for a competition she’s entering and we are all wishing her the best of luck! Fantastic work, Maya!

Luna, aged 13, with her original Vanitas drawing. A vanitas is an artwork that reminds us that beauty, wealth, and achievement are temporary and that life is fleeting. Its purpose was to encourage reflection on mortality and the transience of worldly pleasures. The tradition became especially prominent in 17th-century Northern Europe, particularly the Dutch Republic. Common symbols include skulls, candles, hourglasses, wilting flowers, decaying fruit, books, mirrors, and money. I think Luna did a great job using what she learned about this genre to create this composition. Proud of you! đź‘Ź
