Brian and Leila took this edition of NLNL off in order to check out as many SXSW shows as possible so I brought a crate of records and spun this all-vinyl (except for Le Tigre's "TKO") DJ set in the back room at West China Tea House.

For the last three Tuesdays I have run Christmas song karaoke from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at . I'll be running Christmas karaoke one more time at TLC on Christmas Eve, this Sunday, from 7:00 to 9:00 and want to encourage folks to drop in because the food and vibes are good.

I’ll be DJing out in public at two upcoming events:

Tomorrow, Friday, October 14th, I’ll be outside at the Littlefield Patio Cafe DJing from 4-6pm for a UT Kickoff Tailgating event thing put on by UT Housing and Dining. I’m covering for another DJ and have been given permission to play pretty much whatever I want so I’m bringing two turntables and a bunch of daylight-appropriate house records. Come by and say hello:

Club Dongle:
My friend Brian Pennington (nom de guerre: Brian Blackout) is co-host of the bi-weekly No Lights No Lycra ATX parties at West China Tea House and he co-authors the Lite + Brite weekly Austin event newsletter with his partner Leila. He has been hosting a show called ‘No Humans Allowed’ on Brooklyn internet radio station KPISS for several years and, since before the pandemic, has been itching to throw a robot-themed dance party IRL. Well, that’s now happening at dadaLab on Friday, October 21st. The party’s called ‘Club Dongle: No Humans Allowed’ and It’s a robot dance party where humans are not allowed. So, if you’re not a robot, you’re going to have to dress up like a robot to trick the bouncers. They are going to make you solve a CAPTCHA to get into the party so just pretend you’re a Tesla and cannot identify stoplights, dogs, or children.

I’m opening the party, playing chuggy, robotic, sub-120 BPM dance records before both Brian and Gino Scaramuzza, who is still fuming that he was passed over for Chris Pratt in that upcoming Mario movie. panoptikon.party is doing our visuals so everything's gonna look sick.

"I am not a country music DJ but, because I freelance for several local event companies, I find myself getting booked to DJ a lot of country music weddings. And, having now played country music at weddings here in Central Texas for more than three years, I've got a lot of songs that I love and love to play out. So this mix began with me picking out my absolute favorite country songs before I recalled an idea that flashed across my mind months ago: "What if I made a DJ mix that consisted entirely of a subset of 'boyfriend' country songs about how much the narrator loves 'doing it' with his partner?" At the weddings I DJ, these types of songs like "Your Man," "Getting You Home," and "That Look" usually go over really well on the dancefloor. So this mix touches on that theme and a couple of others: you'll hear songs about desire, longing, heartbreak, and hooking-up that are at times wistful, comical, and confident. And it's all smoothly mixed and blended in Ableton Live. Enjoy!"
