I’m very pleased to be a panelist at the Austin Architecture & Design Conference tomorrow, joining a great group of design and development professionals for a conversation about the future of Austin’s built environment.

Our discussion will focus on adaptive reuse, placemaking, and the evolving role of design in shaping Austin’s neighborhoods and urban spaces — a particularly meaningful topic for me, as adaptive reuse has been a key project type throughout my years in practice.

I’m looking forward to sharing perspectives, hearing from others in the industry, and talking about how we can thoughtfully balance growth, identity, sustainability, and livability as Austin continues to evolve.

Great knives deserve a box worthy of them.

This custom knife box was designed and built by Yakū|Shima Maker Workshop to house a set of knives by Jerry Stone, a well-known but under-the-radar master knife maker from South Texas. It was a privilege to create something that could both serve the client and do justice to Stone’s remarkable work.

There are three identical boxes, each holding 12 of Jerry’s steak knives, rendered in American cherry and hard maple with a leather liner.

The design was approached with intention: to complement the knives without competing with them, and to create a home that feels as considered as the blades themselves.
Solid wood construction, clean joinery, subtle details in the handholds, and carefully fitted compartments make it as functional as it is beautiful. Like the knives themselves, the box is heirloom quality- a gift for our client’s three daughters.
A simple idea, done at the highest level.
