OUR MISSION
We’re committed to creating a museum experience that inspires visitors to discover the unexpected about the world and themselves. HOW WE DO IT
Founded in 1963, the Blanton has emerged as the principal art museum for both the city of Austin and The University of Texas at Austin, with a national reputation for innovative programming and bold leadership. Our collection includes more than

22,000 artworks, with depth in modern and contemporary American and Latin American art, Italian Renaissance and Baroque paintings, and prints and drawings. We present regularly changing installations from the collection, special projects with contemporary artists, dynamic site-specific installations throughout our grounds, and major thematic exhibitions built from our pioneering scholarship and partnerships with museums worldwide. As part of our commitment to Austin and to helping shape its future, the Blanton offers education and community programs that gather and connect people, represent diverse perspectives and experiences, deepen learning and understanding, and bring joy. Part sculpture, part software — this artwork needs a stable connection. 🌐 Our installation team built the structure to house both the sculpture and computer powering it.

"Billow I" by Daniel Canogar pulls the most popular Google search terms in real time, displaying them as colorful abstract animations moving across the sculptural LED screens. The more viral the search term, the warmer the tones; as the number of hits drop, they turn into cooler blues and eventually dissolve. Because the artwork is built by our collective online behavior, it never appears the same twice — ebbing and flowing like our digital age, and echoing the sculpture’s water-like architecture.

〜 "Billow I," 2020, Flexible LED screen, computer, custom software, internet connection, metal frame, Collection of the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Foundation

"Run The Code: Data-Driven Art Decoded by Thoma Foundation X Blanton Museum of Art" is organized by the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Foundation in collaboration with the Blanton Museum of Art.

Support for this exhibition is provided in part by J. P. Morgan Private Bank.
