"Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged on account of s*x." In 1972, Congress passed The Equal Rights Amendment. It then needed to be ratified by 3/4's of the states to become part of the U.S. Constitution. In 1982 the deadline set by Congress expired, 3 states short.
Erma Bombeck served on the President's National Advisory Committee for Women and campaigned tirelessly for the amendment alongside Liz Carpenter, Gloria Steinem, Bella Abzug, and many others.
While the impact of her work for the Equal Rights Amendment isn't as well known as her books and newspaper columns, it was one of her proudest achievements.
"I wish that they could put this on my tombstone" Bombeck once told a reporter, "She got Missouri for the ERA.”

🗓Tonight at 7:30pm is your last chance to catch Erma Bombeck: At Wit's End at Austin Playhouse starring Sarah Fleming Walker as the iconic humorist.
