We're thrilled to present the Fusebox Festival 2023 Program Lineup! Get to know these remarkable artists and their projects on our website and map out your festival plans now. 🤩

This year we’re changing up the ticketing process. In order to properly support our expanded vision for the future, and in an attempt to keep up with the economic realities of creating/producing unique live performances in an increasingly expensive Austin, we are shifting to a paid ticketing model for the festival. Tickets will be offered on a sliding scale model, starting at $20 (with $15 walk-up tickets). Additionally, we will still offer free performances and events throughout the festival. For more info on this new shift, check out our website: https://buff.ly/3YxHLTW

Festival passes go on sale March 14th & Individual Tickets go on sale March 28th. We can’t wait to see you April 12-16! ✨

Running November 4-14, Meghan Brown’s darkly funny, sharp new play explores the nuances of political resistance, self-interest and individual action taken to create hope in the face of hopelessness.

Livestreaming The New Solidarity: Art, Organizing & Radical Politics

A provocative new film by world-renowned director Milo Rau and two conversations about how artists and social movements are reshaping their work to meet this historical moment
Friday 9 July + Saturday 10 July • All events are free and online

Friday 9 July at 12 a.m. through 11:59 p.m. Saturday 10 July EDT
A special screening of Milo Rau’s The New Gospel
Available for viewing at any time in these 48 hours

Since 2007, Milo Rau has been weaving aesthetics with political activism in the theatre and films he’s made with his company, The International Institute of Political Murder. In 2018, Rau also became the artistic director of NTGent in Belgium, whose mission and programs have since been animated by a radical new manifesto for the theatre.

The New Gospel is a 21st century retelling of the Passion of Christ. Inspired by the 1964 "Jesus film" of Pier Paolo Pasolini, The New Gospel was filmed in the ancient Italian city of Matera. In Rau’s film—part movie, part documentary, part political campaign—Jesus is played by Cameroonian political activist Yvan Sagnet (recently knighted in Italy for his work with migrants). The film follows Sagnet’s Jesus as he spearheads a Revolt of Dignity, a grassroots movement of migrant workers, many of whom are African refugees, in Italy and beyond. Read more about the film and the ongoing movement at “A Director Asks, Would Jesus Stand With Today’s Migrants?” (The New York Times).

“[in The New Gospel] we don’t just get the last supper and the biblical quotes, we also see the auditions, the rehearsals and the material on either side of each take. It’s about what it means to tell the story as much as it is about the story itself.” - The Guardian

Friday 9 July: How are artists seizing power today?
1 p.m. - 3 p.m. PDT (San Francisco, UTC -7) / 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. CDT (Chicago, UTC -5) / 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. EDT (New York, UTC -4)

A conversation with: Milo Rau, Toshi Regan, Marc Bamuthi Joseph/The Kennedy Center, Alec Duffy/Jack NYC and moderator David Bruin.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the murder of George Floyd catalyzed a number of movements, many of them led by artists, aimed at reshaping every aspect of the way theater and performance are produced: We See You White American Theatre, Amplifying Activism, and Anticapitalism for Artists, to name just a few of the many initiatives that are committed to centering justice, sustainability, and solidarity on the stage, in the studio, and beyond. Inspired by these movements, and in dialogue with The New Gospel, this conversation brings together some of the most inspiring theater and performance makers working to change the industries—and the world—in which they work.

Saturday 10 July: How are artists and organizers building solidarity between art and movements?
1 p.m. - 3 p.m. PDT (San Francisco, UTC -7) / 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. CDT (Chicago, UTC -5) / 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. EDT (New York, UTC -4)

A Conversation with: Milo Rau + Yvan Sagnet, Dread Scott, Carlton Turner/Sipp Culture, Kristina Wong, Luis Alfaro, and moderator Virginia Grise.

Over this past year, there’s been a significant increase in the numbers of artists and theatres participating in local and national social justice campaigns. While this is inspiring, it also offers the opportunity to look at the historical challenges of and the future aspirations for relationships between art, its institutions, and social justice movements. What do sustainable relationships look like? How does artistic expression become part of movements in new and provocative ways? How do we engage and share radical imagination? And how do we consider art and artists in the ecology of changing the world? The New Gospel holds some of these inquires, as does the visionary work of the artists and organizers assembled for this conversation.

Event Producers: Melanie Joseph and David Bruin

06/01/2021

Just when it's almost safe to head back indoors, Rude Mechs is starting development on a TWO BIG IDEAS to bring arts lovers to the outdoors and outdoors lovers to the arts. Let's dispel preconceived notions about what theatre is, and create new audience for the arts. Let's connect with local artists, and hopefully inspire new artmakers. Let's put artists in the wilderness and see if it orients their artmaking toward new vistas? Let's ask local artists and residents to share their complex understanding of and connection to the lands they inhabit. LET'S INCLUDE EVERYONE.

If you would like to know more or have a way to contribute or get involved, please let us know!

ART TRAMP (spring 2022) will bring performance to the trails and campgrounds of every park in our National Parks system. Each piece would be tailored to the park's unique geo-features, and address the educational and cultural goals of that park, while shining a light on how troubled the American version of "the outdoors" is. It's easily as troubled as our version of "the arts."

Both should be available to everyone, but aren’t. Both should include everyone, but don’t. For both, the word appropriation doesn’t begin to cover the violence done in the guise of preservation or in service of wealth, control and power.

With a particular focus on bringing visibility to women in the outdoors, we are committed to making visible the people, the history, the culture and the land that has been trampled along the way.

GREAT LOOP (spring 2023) will be a floating rehearsal room and artists residency. Rude Mechs will live aboard a boat circumnavigating the Eastern United States by water: The Atlantic coast, the Hudson, Eerie Canal, The Great Lakes, The Mississippi, The Gulf. Moving at a slower pace. Visiting New York, Detroit, Chicago, St Louis, New Orleans, but also everywhere in between.

The voyage is a performance in and of itself, but also serves as the inspiration and time and space to make a new work based on this voyage. The reality is the Rude Mechs cannot all quit their lives for a year. So, when the Rudes aren’t aboard the boat we will offer it up as a floating Artist Residency.

IF YOU HAVEN'T SPOKEN UP ON BEHALF OF AUSTIN'S PERFORMANCE SCENE, PLEASE DO IT TODAY.

From Austin Creative Alliance:

"This Thursday, May 20, City Council will vote on Item #60, a resolution to allocate American Rescue Plan funds to arts and music.

The resolution currently does three things:

1. Allocates $15m to the Cultural Arts ($7.5m per year for two years).
2. Allocates $10m to support the live music industry, including backfilling the recently created Live Music Fund and adding to relief grants for music industry workers.
3. Directs City staff to avoid using emergency funds to immediately pay back the Cultural Arts Fund $4m deficit, and instead spread the deficit reduction over several years.

We continue to work on getting the following included in the resolution:

1. Increasing the Cultural Arts amount to a total of $20m.
2. Inserting a provision that would make non-profits eligible for future Legacy Business Relief grants.
3. Making previous recipients of Creative Sector Worker grant funds eligible for another round.

What you can do:

1. Go big today, tomorrow and Wednesday with emails to council from your board, staff and audience.
2. While thanking council for their work, urge them to increase the amount for Cultural Arts to $10m per year, reminding them that non-profits were excluded from the Legacy Business Relief Grants, even though the Council Resolution creating the program explicitly mentioned museums, theaters and galleries.
3. Remind council that not only did the Arts community lose its City funding due to Hotel Occupancy Tax revenue losses, we lost our earned income from admissions and other in-person sources.
4. Include a relevant, direct message about the circumstances your organization will confront without robust rescue funding: e.g. closure, job cuts, reductions in programming.

Please share this widely to help generate emails from the community to Council. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hey theatre artists that also do stuff on film / video / web... here's a chance to share it in a festival format at New Ohio Theatre in NYC.

Deadline to submit is 1/22 - $20 submission fee.
There is a late deadline of 2/12 for $10 more.

There are several different categories. All the details are at this link.

( The original Ohio Theatre was the very first place we ever toured to - we did the first workshop showing of Lipstick Traces there a billion years ago, and then later did a 6 week run of the final version there. Blondie was there with her dog in her lap the whole show. We love Robert Lyons forever.)

About Us

Since 1995, Rude Mechs has created a genre-averse slate of original theatrical productions peppered with big ideas, cheap laughs, and dizzying spectacle. What these works hold in common are the use of play to make performance, the use of theaters as meeting places for audiences and artists, and the use of humor as a tool for intellectual investigation. We tour these performances nationally and abroad; maintain Rude Studios, a suite of rooms that are home to artists of every discipline; house a scenic lending library; and run Off Center Teens, a year-round theatre camp for teens. The quality and innovation of the company’s theatrical productions have firmly established Rude Mechs as one of Austin’s most highly valued cultural assets

Auditions for Outcry Theatre's LIPSTICK TRACES begin tonight!! It's not too late for you to join us!

Based on Lipstick Traces: A Secret History of the Twentieth Century by Greil Marcus, Lipstick Traces was originally created and produced by Rude Mechs (Austin, TX). Lipstick Traces is a physically ecstatic and intellectually nervy theatrical vision of “movements in culture that raised no monuments… movements that barely left a trace.”

Auditions are November 8 & 10.

Seeking a creative, passionate, and explosive ensemble of actors and actresses to portray a large range of characters. These artists should be comfortable with theatrical movement, music, and dance. All roles are available. Casting actors ages 16 and up. All actors will receive a stipend.

Performs Feb. 4-12 at the Addison Centre Theatre Studio Theatre.

Hey OUTsiders! Important call to action from our friends at Rude Mechs (Austin, TX). The Austin arts/performance scene is in peril:

IF YOU HAVEN'T SPOKEN UP ON BEHALF OF AUSTIN'S PERFORMANCE SCENE, PLEASE DO IT TODAY. (Read how below)
Thx Rude Mechs (Austin, TX)!
Great article from by Texas Monthly! Congrats to our friend at Vortex, Penfold Theatre Company, Shrewd Productions, Rude Mechs (Austin, TX) and everyone who contributed to telling our story!
Rude Mechs (Austin, TX) wants to help add a little theatre pizzazz to your holidays this year with a Karaoke Christmas Carol, written by faculty member Kirk Lynn. Presented through their newly created Cyrano Plays app, this "production" gives you a chance to team up with your quarantine pod and perform Charles Dickens' classic play with a Rude Mechs twist. Keep an eye out for more information as the holiday season grows nearer.
Curious about how mainstays in the Austin arts scene are planning to present their works in the upcoming months? From outdoor theatre to new residency programs to virtual happenings, hear from our friends at Texas Performing Arts at The University of Texas at Austin, Fusebox Festival, Rude Mechs (Austin, TX), The VORTEX and others about their plans for Fall 2020.
