“Rupert”, a Silkscreen made by Juan Fuentes from our Taller member PAJARO EDITIONS was part of our Portfolio Exchange “La Huella Magistral: Homage to Master Printmakers. (2017, 11” x 22”).

Rupert García was Fuente’s first Chicano Art Professor at San Francisco State who introduced him to screen printing in the early 1970’s. His political posters, anti-imperialist, and anti-colonial stance were a tremendous influence during the Chicano Movement and beyond with many artists of color. Rupert’s work has a bold style, appropriating many of the pictorial devices and premises of Pop Art, but with a Chicano perspective.

Juan de Dios Mora ( )was invited to collaborate in the Portfolio Perro Mundo by our Taller member Arceo Press ( ). Mora contributes with “The Creature”, a Linoleum print, 11” x 15”, made in 2019.
The creature, which largely has dog features, is a representation of a psychological moral conscious regarding fi****ms usage. It’s forced and opened snout is an indication of impulsive violence. The bullets in its snout represent the abundance and access to guns and ammunition. The dollar bill iconography is there to signify how firearm sales prioritize profits over the safety of civilians. The concept of rabies depicts the aggressive nature of infections, making the already violent act of fi****ms worst. As a metaphor, such infection can also affect the mental state of the individual, thus impacting motives and political views toward race and religion.

We recently had our annual Consejo Grafico Nacional ‘21 meeting in Austin Texas. Representatives from each Taller member came together for a 3-day weekend filled with activities and much compañerismo y solidaridad.
We started visiting for an opening reception; next day we held our annual Board Meeting , finishing the day with a reception at our founder’s and beautiful home-museum (and formidable dinner prepared by Amelia Malagamba); and the last day we all worked in a collaborative project at .

This intensive weekend left us all re-charged and most importantly, with a stronger bond between all. Thank you Consejeros for all your hard work, and all that you bring to enrich our coalition!

Francesco X. Siqueiros, director and owner of El Nopal Press (Los Angeles, CA), made this Lithograph “Exercise in the Repetition of a Prayer” for our La Huella Magistral: Homage to Master Printmakers Portfolio (2017).

He is paying homage to Belkis Ayón (1967 -1999) who was a Cuban artist and printmaker. Her graphic works are invested in ritual and inspired by AfroCuban religion. She elaborated the monotype technique in printmaking with distinct and original results, specially the polyptych monotypes that with their religious narrative and phantasmagoric presence invoke the past and the continuous presence of history.

Francesco X. Siqueiros( m)graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1973, and from the Sorbonne in Paris, France, with bachelor’s degree in Plastic Arts in 1974. In 1983 he was accepted in the University of California, Santa Cruz to complete graduate work, concentrating in lithography. In 1990, he founded El Nopal Press, which continues to thrive today from a studio located in Downtown Los Angeles. The conceptual focus of El Nopal is to underline the heterogeneity of cultural production and to question the hegemony of the dominant cultural perspective.

・・・
"Country for All" by Artist and Printmaker Pepe Coronado of Coronado Print Studio is an 11" x 15" silkscreen print, and part of the Consejo Gráfico Nacional portfolio. "Today’s political environment reflects the reality of this country. The words in this print reflect the issues that are experienced by the people in this society. These are not new experiences, but a reinforcement of the history of this country and how it was founded," said Coronado.

Pepe is the Founder of Coronado Print Studio in Austin, Texas and El Barrio in New York City, a collaborative space with a concentration on print projects with American artists of Caribbean descent; as well as a founding member of the collective "Dominican York Proyecto GRAFICA". His work is based on his interest in borders, boundaries and historical events that have effects on the current situation and relationship between the Dominican Republic, Haiti and the United States. Pepe holds an M.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and has exhibited internationally. See "Beware of wolves" and works from the entire (raw world) portfolio as part of our virtual gallery at www.selfhelpgraphics.com/2021/perro-mundo."My interpretation of Perro Mundo is centered on the idea of innocence, lost innocence, and the hope needed to navigate current social, environmental, and political issues affecting our lives," said Artist Jose Areneas of (Taller Arte del Nuevo Amanecer).

California-based artist Jose Arenas creates works that explore dual identities, personal ritual, migration, and the feelings of displacement that happen from growing up in two countries. Arenas received a BFA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute (1995), and an MFA from UC Davis (2000). His work has been exhibited throughout the United States. Arenas is Associate Director and Chief Curator of Taller Arte del Nuevo Amanecer, a community centered silkscreen program and extension of the UC Davis Chicana/o Studies Silk- screen program in Woodland, CA.
