Dolly Parton and Tim Curry. They sum up perfectly the scope of courage it takes to be wildly, brightly, brazenly authentic to one’s self and one’s craft.
How great it is to find ourselves inspired by two titans who took the concept of “over-the-top” and brought it to magnificently large heights. These icons expanded our minds to the possibility of turning the dreams, characters, and heartaches that live inside of us, inside out- so that we could bring them to the stage for all to behold.
Their enormous risk-taking as artists serves as a reminder that we owe it to our inner selves to remain devoted to our self-expression and our artistic resilience in world that is increasingly telling us we are replaceable and legislatable. Our rebellious purpose as burlesque artists owes them a debt of gratitude for the crossroads they paved where satire, the taboo, and intelligence meet.
We love deeply the collage of fishnets, rhinestones, makeup, kitsch and high-camp, gender-bending, rule breaking, bustiers, bold songs, big hair, and bigger heels that both Dolly Parton and Tim Curry brought to our lives. It is their decade-spanning careers full of deliberate, joyful construction of identity used as a form of freedom and radical authenticity, that made them inspirations to The Jigglewatts and to us all. And so, we say THANK YOU to these stars for their life-giving art and influence.
