Back where it all began! We hosted a special retrospective screening and Q&A of SHOTGUN STORIES with writer/director Jeff Nichols at Galaxy Theaters Austin. Jeff’s debut feature film won our Narrative Feature Jury Award when it screened at AFF in 2007.

In the post-screening Q&A, Jeff broke down his unique approach to story structure, and finding narrative surprises through the creative process.

PROGRAMMING ANNOUNCEMENT: We’re thrilled to highlight our 2026 Film First Wave! This year’s lineup includes the World Premiere of THE STALEMATE, starring Ben Foster and Manny Jacinto, as well as Texas Premieres of Brad Bird’s RAY GUNN, starring Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell; Tony Gilroy’s BEHEMOTH!, starring Pedro Pascal; Peter Farrelly’s I PLAY ROCKY; Andrew Haigh’s A LONG WINTER; and the music documentary BLEEDING HEARTS, featuring Chaparelle, who will perform an intimate set following the screening.

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Brad Bird will receive the 2026 Extraordinary Contribution to Filmmaking Award, alongside acclaimed filmmaker and Writer’s Writer Awardee Andrew Haigh, and New Voice Awardee and visionary playwright-turned-filmmaker Aleshea Harris.

This year’s Writers Conference will dive into recent hits and beloved favorites of film and tv, featuring the creative minds behind THE BOYS, THE HUNGER GAMES, THE SHEEP DETECTIVES, TOY STORY 5, WEAPONS, and more.

We are thrilled to share that our 2025 Dark Matters Jury Award Winner, CRUEL HANDS, is now available on VOD!

Co-written by Al and Matthew Kalyk, CRUEL HANDS is a slow burn thriller following a desperate mother as she and her son seek haven from her abusive husband amidst the worst bushfire in Australia’s history. CRUEL HANDS had its World Premiere at Austin Film Festival in 2025. After its festival run, the film was picked up for distribution by Dark Sky Films. Congrats to Al and Matthew!

Congratulations to 2025 AFF Script Competition Finalists Kieran and Brennan O’Dea on the recent sale of their spec script, THE BALLAD OF THE EMBER KNIGHT, to Sony Pictures! The brothers have made waves across the industry with a near seven-figure deal, an extraordinary feat for a first-time script sale. We can’t wait to see this epic story brought to life on the big screen!

The pair previously made the finalist round of AFF's 2025 Sci-Fi Feature Award category for their script THE MAN WHO CAME FROM THE RIVER.

As a part of our monthly screening series with Galaxy Theatres Austin, join us for a special retrospective screening of Jeff Nichols’ feature film debut SHOTGUN STORIES on Monday, August 31! Writer/director Jeff Nichols will join us for a Q&A immediately following the screening.

SHOTGUN STORIES had its US Premiere at the 2007 Austin Film Festival where it won the Narrative Feature Jury Award.
