Evergreen Sumac is beautiful with their seasonal red and green color. They are also delicious if you aren't allergic to plants in the poison ivy family. The tart berries taste like sour patch kids because of their malic acid and have a lot of vitamin c.

FROM TEXAS BEYOND HISTORY:
Evergreen sumac, are widespread across the western Edwards Plateau and Trans-Pecos regions, as well as much of the Southwest. Both shrubs were used for food and drink and were a component of the Native American pharmacopoeia (herbal medicines).

The fruit is eaten fresh and ground into meal by the Navajo. The Cahuilla, Comanche, and Hopi ate the fresh berries. The Mescalero Apache mixed baked agave with sumac fruits and dried the mixture for storage. They gathered the red fruits from midsummer to fall and sun-dried them. The dried fruit was ground between flat stones and made into jam or mixed with sunflower seeds. The Havasupai gathered and dried the fruits for winter storage and use.

Several groups used the berries to make beverages or soups. The Havasupai crushed the berries and mixed them with water to make a drink. The Cahuilla ground the berries into flour and added it to soups.

Observed this beautiful Panus conchatus, commonly known as the lilac oysterling on an evening hike. It is an inedible species of mushroom that occurs throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Its fruitbodies are characterized by a smooth, lilac- or tan-colored cap, and decurrent gills. The fungus is saprophytic and fruits on the decomposing wood of a wide variety of deciduous and coniferous trees. Despite being a gilled species, phylogenetic analysis has shown it is closely related to the pored species found in the family Polyporaceae.
