Jo-Dee Benson is at home in Austin, Texas where she retired in 2021 as an executive for a global technology company. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Art from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, for the next 30 years she channeled her passion for the creative arts into corporate marketing communications and intentionally nurturing her family. Her early creative endeavors began in photography, print-making and stained glass. Jo-Dee’s introduction to mosaics came in January 2022 at The Contemporary Austin - Laguna Gloria art school where her joy and passion for the art form was ignited. She continues her studies at the Chicago Mosaic School, and also seeks out special opportunities to learn from visiting artists. She is engaged with the mosaic arts community as a member of the Austin Mosaic Guild, Contemporary Mosaic Art2, and the Society of American Mosaic Artists.
For Jo-Dee, mosaic arts are the culmination of all her learning and experience in different artistic media, now joyfully expressed in this single art form. It is her hope that her work will evoke contemplation and introspection for those who interact with it. With an array of varied surfaces melded into often intricate patterns, her pieces invite observers to delve deeper into their unique personal layers, to discover the narratives woven within. Each work offers a visual tapestry that can speak to the universal human condition, challenging viewers to reflect upon the complexity of our spiritual and emotional existence, whether hard or tender, and ultimately find an interconnectedness of all the parts.
