Mission Statement for Austin Short Track Roller Derby

Austin Short Track Roller Derby provides a fun, useful, balanced, and slightly weird (in a good way!) version of modern flat track roller derby. We abide by the number one rule of “don’t be a jerkface” and provide a self-governed approach to improve roller derby scrimmaging skills in a lower stress model than found elsewhere. A fun way to exercise, short track roller derby is perfect for beginners, great for intermediate skaters, and an opportunity for advanced skaters to mentor.

Happy Thursday!!
It's scrimmage night, and we couldn't be more excited.
Last week was AWESOME, even though we had a small turnout, so please invite all your skater friends! We were able to get some really great and super fun track time in for the beginner / intermediate skaters.
As we continue to grow our Thursday night scrimmages, we have decided to make a few small changes.
From 7-7:30 (ish) we will be doing warm-ups and drills. All skaters are welcome to attend even if you are not scrimmage ready. We want to help you get there!!! The more time on your skates the better, and then you can kick them off and get some valuable watch time in!
We will be focusing on positional blocking only. Positional blocking is blocking without hitting, driving, or leaning. A skater positions their body in front of an opposing skater to impede the opposing skater's movement on the track. This happens to be the most EFFECTIVE blocking techniques and everyone needs to work on this skill.
If you are an advanced skater, make this your opportunity to help your up and coming skater friends grow and get better!!! We are all in this together!!
As always, feel free to offer up any suggestions!! Hope to see you tonight!! Please help us out and share our event. xoxoxo

Last night was a fantastic! Had some questions pop up, so here is a bit of a follow up.

First question: is there bridging? Yes, although difficult to be a solo blocker! Lol.

“Proximity is defined as an In-Bounds and Upright position within 10’ of another Blocker who is In Play
Any Blocker who is In-Bounds and Upright, within Proximity of another Pack Skater is considered In Play.”

The second question was about the front pack being out of play. Should they run back to join play? Answer is, they can either wait for the pack to catch up or run back.

“Blocker who is Out of Play in front of the pack must “Yield”Remedy their position by coming to a stop and waiting for the pack to arrive at their position, or skating to meet the Pack. They do not need to assume the Yield Position if they choose to stop and wait, and are considered In Play for the purpose of contact.”
