Hello My Friends,
After 40 years, this is the last show I will be directing. How lucky I have been to have worked with so many wonderful young people, talented artists, and gotten to love every minute of it! To each of you who were there, thank you!!!
This year kidsActing is doing a special benefit performance of Into the Woods this Friday, Feb. 28. It’s a fun party with wine and hors d’oeuvres starting at 6:00pm, the show starting at 7pm. (The wine continues to pour throughout the show:)
I have been truly concerned about the well-being of young people over the last 15 years, and feel that social media and phones play a large part. Short of not letting students use phones at kidsActing, encouraging them to turn them off for two hours after school every day, and loving them and talking to them, I didn’t know how to help. But, I discovered an anti-bullying organization here in Austin,The Kindness Campaign (TKC), that has a full program to help kids, working in many schools. I met with them and was very, very impressed with their work. I also was horrified to learn that kids in 2nd and 3rd grades are now “cutting” which is why they often start their programs with 2nd and 3rd graders. Kids are insecure so bullying is way up. We need to help the kids.
I invited TKC to do a workshop with some of our teachers and the cast of "Into the Woods" and again, I was so impressed with what they do. The Kindness Campaign is a bi-lingual program that provides the tools to empower children with the skills to be kind leaders, handle difficult situations, and know they are “enough.”
From their website:
TKC provides interactive tools as early as Pre-K to develop skills related to Self-Image, Emotional Awareness, Empathy and Community (SEEC). TKC’s essential pillars of learning, the SEEC pillars, have observable and transformative effects on how children and adults see themselves and relate to the world around.
