If you're an annual visitor to our student exhibitions, you might notice three new projects on display this year! 🐇 🐩 🐙

The 3D printed sculptures included in the exhibition were created as a part of a stop motion animation project in Design II taught by Yousif Del Valle, which focuses on 3D Design. The figures were sculpted in oil based clay using modeling tools, calipers and real life sources of the objects.

As an option, students could use their sculpted figures as a model for an extra credit assignment that would allow them to have a digital model of their physical sculpture along with the potential of a 3D printed replica through a process known as photogrammetry. In order for the digitization to happen, the students had to take 300 pictures of their sculptures from all angles according to specific lighting and positioning instructions. Once submitted, their instructor uploaded the files to the software and printed the objects.

Though optional, the assignment is meant to expose students to the relationship of the sculptural process from physical to digital; and the potential this can bring for replication, scale manipulation and editing potential of digital models. Visit us in Gallery 2000 to see examples of the digitization process for these new projects!
