I see you out there. You’re heading into the office early, or working through lunch, or staying a little late. You’re walking the dog, mowing the lawn, folding a load of laundry, trying to get to the gym. You’re up at midnight, baking cupcakes for the school party. You’re dropping off a package or picking up a few things at the grocery store. You’re taking classes, reading books, listening to podcasts, staying up on the news. You’re calling a friend, just to listen. You’re doing so much—working hard to get it all done, working to do a little better.

I see all this, and I’m exhausted. I don’t know how you do it. And looking back, I don’t quite know how I did it either. But fairly often now, I’m asked how I was able to complete a novel while working full time.

Edgar Cosentino can’t stand lies. A talented painter, he’s hired as the set designer for a struggling theater troupe touring the Midwest by train. Within its eccentric cast, he finds happiness in his budding relationship with actress Ava Vale, but Ava soon realizes his revulsion for lying has accidentally trapped her with a secret—she’s technically married. All the while, playwright Fallon Finn-Dorset watches this drama unfold and incorporates aspects into her plays. But strange things happen on the train—the troupe is accompanied by a partly tame fox and a barman resembling Abraham Lincoln, and random elements of Fallon’s writings magically come to life. Lies blur with truth, and fiction populates reality in ways that have dangerous consequences for Edgar, Ava, and others. Can their stories be rewritten to save the relationship as well as the future of the troupe? PLAY, WITH KNIVES is a highly inventive novel—surreal and poetic, yet full of lighthearted humor—about the morality of art, the subjectivity of truth and reality, and the magic of the written word.

The very best part of my publication journey has been hearing from friends, family, coworkers, and readers who are interested in PLAY, WITH KNIVES and want to know how they can help.

In answer, I’m taking a stab at launching a free newsletter.

Subscribers will be the first to know about the book’s successes and failures. They’ll get glimpses behind the scenes that won’t be posted on social media, and they’ll also learn how they can support my efforts.

I invite you to join the cast and play a part!
