A little insight into my creative brain 👩🏼🎨👇🏻
One of my most frequently asked questions at markets is, “where is this a painting of?” People are usually surprised when I tell them most of my work is completely made up, as I rarely paint from photos. If I do snap a photo that inspires me, the artwork that comes from is usually never a complete remake. When working from a photo, I usually look at it for the initial loose sketch and composition, then never look at it again once I start painting. I like to see where my mind takes me. I paint clouds that look like bubbles, so it’s safe to say I don’t mind exploring outside of reality.
The paintings and sketches shown here were inspired by a photo I took on a walk along Kailua Beach, Oahu. You can tell I was most inspired by the wonky palm tree and mountains, as those pieces of the photo stayed the same. I let myself fill in the gaps between these attractions with whatever cottage or greenery I felt necessary.
