NEW INSTRUCTOR ALERT!

Ballet Afrique welcomes Alexandra Achieng Ligawa to our teaching staff! We are honored and excited to have her on board! Peep our stories for some cute pics of her Q & A with BADA company dancers. 👀👀👀

With a background in Classical Ballet, Modern Contemporary and Tap, Alexandra brings over 20 years of experience in dance and the arts.  Working for the Universal Dance Association, she taught both high school and college level dance at multiple universities. In college, Alexandra studied ethnochoreology, as well as dance and anthropology at both Texas Women's University and Texas State University.

Over the past 10 years, this 15 year Austin resident has spent her time in various projects in the arts.  As a jack of all trades, she has been the subject of multiple projects including acting and modeling, and has both choreographed and performed in a number of music videos, recently including Black Pumas’ “Black Moon Rising”.

Driven by a passionate belief that dance is for everyone, she seeks to educate and uplift the community through the arts.  She believes expression through movement is truly healing, and that there’s a wealth of knowledge in understanding the body.  Having ballet as a foundation has opened many doors for Ms. Ligawa, and she seeks to help others have those same opportunities and reach their fullest potential.

🌺A Deeply Personal Post ~..............
This is the very first, EVER- ballet leotard I purchased with my own money. I was 11/12 years old. I saved up for it mowing lawns (I’m talking ACREAGE) with a push mower in the summer. I had been dancing for quite a while now, but had leotards passed down from my peers who no longer wanted theirs. Sometimes the lost and found box.
Those are the first pointe shoes I ever purchased. Black from years on stages. Yes, that’s blood- my blood. They don’t come assembled, so I sewed on the ribbons and elastic by hand- my first time sewing. I did it at night by closet light so I wouldn’t be mocked or get in trouble- everyone “knew” there were no black ballerinas.
In the third picture, is a broken “shank”- my feet were so strong I broke them early. This surprised everyone.
So did the scholarships.
When I won that year, many mothers were angry because it was their child’s “turn” and I bested them. ADULTS refused to applaud as I went up and accepted it.
(They would get back at me with comments about me being an orphan oddball who’s clothing didn’t fit right... I won’t continue on that, but let’s just say it was made clear I didn’t deserve to be there. When I got older, I got more of the same, but when finances became the issue, I heard: “It’s mature of me to understand my place. Not everyone gets to do what they love”.
Dance has stayed with me. It still is mine to share, teach and experience.
The world is still a place where those who experience “otherness” and manage to carry it with grace are often exploited for this ability. For this talent. How dare they believe they deserve to be here?
Your socio-economical class does NOT determine your worth. Your strength does not mean you are to be sacrificed for the sake of others.
YOU deserve it all.
YOU BELONG.
