RIP Coach, Chicago Bears lets win this years superbowl for him! The Ditka way.

On this day, the Great Chicago Fire began, setting off a two-day inferno that reshaped a city and, in many ways, modern America. Sparked on the Near West Side, the blaze rode fierce winds through wooden neighborhoods and even leapt the South Branch of the river—helped along by lumber yards and tar-lined roofs. By the time rain finally doused the flames, roughly 300 were dead and a third of Chicago lay in ruins.

Yet out of the ashes, Chicago reinvented itself. The fire spurred some of the nation’s first building codes and ignited a boom in steel-frame construction that made the skyscraper possible. Relief arrived astonishingly fast: within 36 hours, aid trains rolled in from St. Louis, Cincinnati, and beyond, and the Chicago Board of Trade reopened just days later to steady commerce. A lesser-known twist: the much-maligned O’Leary family was officially cleared by the city in 1997—ending the myth that a cow’s kick caused it all.

Marking the 155th anniversary, we remember not just devastation, but resilience—and a rebirth that helped define American urban life.
