Hong Kong Cafe

My good friend Barbara Shannon Bannister and I go out to lunch once a month to catch up on all things related to Aurora. Barbara had a distinguished 36-year career working for the city of Aurora, founded the Aurora Chapter of the NAACP, and now serves as a
member of the city’s Civil Service Commission.

Every month, we try a new restaurant in Aurora and today we went to the Hong Kong Cafe, located at 10890 E. Darthmouth Ave. , in Aurora.

We shared an order of Jalapeno Chicken and their Crispy Duck. We both loved their food.

The Hong Kong Cafe is open from 11:00 am to 8:30 pm Sunday through Thursday and from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm on Friday through Saturday.

The City of Aurora honored a true community leader by naming a road in front of the Aurora Municipal Center “Dr. Barbara Shannon-Bannister Road.”

Dr. Barbara Shannon-Bannister was a former Aurora City Council Member whose decades of service helped shape the city we know today. She founded the Aurora chapter of the NAACP, established the Aurora Community of Faith, and created the Aurora Key Community Response Team- building lasting infrastructure for advocacy, faith partnership, and community response that continues to benefit residents.

Leadership leaves a mark. Dr. Shannon-Bannister’s impact is now permanently reflected in the heart of our city.

Aurora Civil Rights Icon Barbara Shannon-Bannister Turns 90

My good friend Barbara Shannon-Bannister just celebrated her 90th birthday.

Barbara had a distinguished 36-year career working for the city of Aurora, founded the Aurora Chapter of the NAACP, and, until recently, had served as a member of the city’s Civil Service Commission.

Earlier this year, in recognition of all of her decades of work that ultimately laid the foundation to make Aurora a welcoming city for all who call it home, Barbara Shannon-Bannister was recognized with the naming the street in front of the Aurora Municipal Center, after her.

In the photo is Barbara Shannon-Bannister standing by the sign, in front of the Aurora Municipal Center, that is named after her.
