What exactly does “community engagement” mean in public art?

Open calls often use terms without clearly defining expectations, leaving artists to fill in the gaps. These barriers can be especially challenging for emerging artists and those with less access to professional networks and resources.

While in New York, Iryna Kanishcheva met with artist Mia Pearlman at CUNY’s James Gallery to see “Culture and Representation in America: The Impact of CETA,” an exhibition about a federal program that funded jobs for artists working with local communities.

What is art? Anything, even wire mesh usually used for fencing can become a delicate, layered sculpture. Its open structure lets you look through it, while overlapping patterns make it appear denser from certain angles. As you move, the relationship between the wire, the empty space, and the surrounding light changes.

I love this combination of two integrated design elements: a large environmental graphic map around the escalator opening and a programmable luminous ceiling.

The oval/funnel-shaped artwork around the escalators is a 1,988-square-foot illustrated map of metropolitan New York. It is not a traditional mosaic. It was designed as an environmental graphic by Creative Source, Inc., led by its president and creative director Carol Smith, with illustration/design work associated with Sar Stewart Design.

The map extends geographically from West Point down the Hudson to Staten Island and east across Long Island. It was produced in 65 printed sections to fit the complex double-curved surface around the escalators. MTA Construction & Development commissioned it, and WSP USA selected Creative Source for the graphic design.

Located at the East End Gateway / renovated Long Island Rail Road concourse at New York Penn Station.

Two days left to apply. Disabled artists and artists with lived experience of disability are especially encouraged to apply.

The University of Florida is commissioning permanent public art for its Disability Resource Center.

Accessibility is also built into Monochronicle, with features supporting users with dyslexia, low vision, color-vision differences, and other visual or cognitive needs, including readable typography, strong contrast, clear navigation, and information that does not rely on color alone.

Budget starts at $76,250 + $1,250 honoraria for three shortlisted artists. Open internationally to mid-career artists working in mural, sculpture, light, sound, and interactive art.

Deadline: August 28.

At the end of 2025, we produced Lumenaura, a light art festival that transformed downtown Aurora, Illinois with 15 large-scale installations by artists from around the world.

Among them was Emergence by This Is Loop, an audiovisual installation exploring the space between order and chaos. Its mirrored nodes create individual optical illusions that, when experienced together, become something larger: a complex, constantly shifting system inspired by emergence theory.

We documented the project from planning and production through installation and opening night, and later released a short film about the work and the process behind bringing it into public space.

That is one reason we are excited to submit the film to Hiding in Plain Site: International Public Art Short Film Festival.

So many thoughtful films are made about public art. They are screened once, published online, shared for a few weeks, and eventually disappear into an archive or hard drive. Hiding in Plain Site gives these films another life, bringing stories about public art back in front of audiences and onto the big screen.

Founded and directed by Jack Becker, longtime public art curator, writer, producer, founder of Forecast Public Art and Public Art Review, the festival is dedicated entirely to the global public art ecosystem and the people working beyond traditional art venues.

The international call for short films is open to artists and filmmakers worldwide. Deadline: September 10, 2026. Festival previews are planned for Minneapolis, Phoenix, and Brasília this fall.
