In January of 2025, I began plans to build a catenary arch soda kiln on our property for a class at WSU. Since then, my grandpa and I have been working on building this kiln out of hard brick that we’ve found from places all over Kansas-using Facebook marketplace and gifted by friends. The Venturi burners were repurposed from a previous kiln, gifted from friends at Elk Falls Pottery. The sliding door was welded from pieces of old salvaged bed frames, and It has a metal heat shield to protect the wooden frame-both designed by my grandpa. My great uncle hooked up the burners to the propane. The kiln was officially loaded and fired off on Tuesday, May 26th, and was unloaded on Friday, May 29th. There are improvements to be made before the next firing, but the kiln was fired to cone 10. We’ve learned a lot in the process, and are very grateful to all of the people who helped play a role in making this happen. With lots of help from family and friends, Lazy Moon Ranch is now soda firing!🏺

We had a great Paint-A-Pot group out last Sunday and the finished pots were just pulled out of the kiln! They are ready to be picked up in the bowling lockers right next to the door of the big tan building with the red roof, next to the vending machine.

Thank you to everyone who came out!!
