Kepelino was a noted Hawaiian historian born in Kailua, Kona, around 1830, and though his father Namiki was a priest of Paʻao’s lineage, his parents were early converts to Catholicism. Kepelino went to a Western school and qualified for a teacher’s certificate, but he was steeped in the knowledge of his family and met with other learned Hawaiians to discuss moʻolelo. As a keeper of the ʻike of his kūpuna, Kepelino well knew that “ahu kupanaha iā Hawaiʻi ʻimi loa,” that the knowledge of the Hawaiian people was astonishing and that it came from always searching far and deep for more.

In his writing, he went on to say, “E noiʻi wale mai nō ka haole-ā, ʻaʻole e pau nā hana a Hawaiʻi ʻimi loa,” that the outsiders can study us as much as they like, but they will never be able to know all of our works.

Yet the same thing can be said of us.

Kānaka can study our own culture for our entire lives and never know everything there is to know. And that is our strength. We know the winds and the rains and the rocks and the tides. We know how to live in relationship with the ʻāina. We are vast like the seas connecting us to our cousins across the Pacific, and while we understand that we will not be able to know every bit of this ocean, we must never stop the search. Seeking after learning, after knowledge, after pono. Seek on, Hawaiʻi ʻimi loa, seek on.
