Like his paintings, Vincent's letters are a window into his soul. They capture a soul tortured by self-doubt, but they also reveal his artistic genius and deep connection to the natural world around him, as well as his deeply cherished relationship with his brother, Theo.

In many of his letters Van Gogh describes the progress of his work in painstaking detail. He would often include a sketch of paintings he had already begun or musings on works he hoped someday to create.

It’s impossible to tell the story of Vincent Van Gogh without also telling the story of his devoted brother Theo. Despite Vincent's many personal challenges, Theo continued to provide unwavering support throughout Vincent's life. Theo even encouraged Vincent to be an artist, and how happy we are that he did.
