The story they don’t tell you about desegregation.

For decades, Atlantic Beach, South Carolina was known as “The Black Pearl of the Carolina Coast.”

Segregation shut us out of beaches across the region, so we built our own.

Black-owned hotels.
Black-owned restaurants.
Black-owned nightclubs.

James Brown, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Ella Fitzgerald and other legends performed for Black crowds who dressed to the nines just to be there.

For generations, our families vacationed there.

Our musicians performed there.

Our sunsets belonged to us there.

Then the law changed.

And here is the part that rarely gets told:

Once we gained the freedom to visit other beaches, many of us stopped supporting the one we had built for ourselves.

Atlantic Beach lost much of its economic foundation.

The Black-owned hotels closed.
The clubs went quiet.
The Pearl began to fade.

Not because the culture disappeared, but because we stopped choosing the places that carried it.

That is one of the quiet costs of freedom without repair.

We won the right to go anywhere, but we began losing the places that had once been ours.

This October, we are choosing the Pearl again.

The Sunsets & Soul Music Festival is three days on the same sand where our grandparents celebrated, danced, built businesses and created memories.

Jazz.
R&B.
Blues.
Comedy.
Gullah Geechee heritage.
Black Southern soul.

Christopher Williams headlining.

Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Dahi Divine.

A saxophonist who performed with James Brown’s band, Leroy Harper Jr.

And a community finally coming home.

Because our culture does not preserve itself.

We preserve it.

The Pearl is still here, waiting for us to come home.

Freedom has always sounded like music 🎶

Today we honor Juneteenth. A celebration of freedom, resilience, remembrance, and the culture that carried us forward.

That same spirit lives in Atlantic Beach, South Carolina, known as the Black Pearl of the Carolina Coast. A place where Black families, artists, entrepreneurs, and travelers gathered to celebrate and create memories by the sea, freedom you could feel in your feet on the sand.

Sunsets & Soul Music Festival is more than a weekend of music. It is a homecoming to history. A celebration of soul, sound, food, art, legacy, and community.

This October, we invite you to experience Atlantic Beach in a way that honors the past while celebrating the joy, creativity, and freedom of today.
