Book Girl Magic A space for our own to be able to read, discuss and share ideas while celebrating diverse literature and sisterhood. Welcome to Book Girl Magic (BGM).

As members of the African American community, we wanted to create a space for our own to be able to read, discuss and share ideas about the books we read. The books are not limited to African American authors, but we wanted to create a space in which fellow African Americans can bond over good reads. We plan to vote on the book of the month so that everyone has input on what they'd like to read. We look forward to the creating memories through reading and fellowship.

It’s Banned Books Week

This Banned Books Week, I’m proudly joining Silent Book Club’s “I’m With the Banned” campaign and today, I’m celebrating one of my favorite books of all time: The Color Purple by Alice Walker. 💜

This book didn’t just change the way I read…it changed the way I saw myself. It’s one of those rare books I can return to again and again, and somehow, it fills me up the same way every. single. time.

That’s why book bans matter. Books give us the opportunity to see ourselves reflected, encounter experiences different from our own, ask difficult questions, and discover parts of ourselves we didn’t know were there. When a book is removed from a library or classroom, a reader loses the opportunity to decide for themselves what a story might mean to them.

The Color Purple is a book that should not be on a banned book list. I want other readers to have the same opportunity I had…to find themselves in its pages, to be challenged by it, to be moved by it, and to experience the joy it has brought me for so many years.

still trying to process this one but i can say that without a doubt, it will land in my Top 10 Reads this year. I felt so many emotions throughout.

Please beware that this one has quite a bit of triggers throughout, but if you can get past those, it’s well worth the read.
