Hani and Her Music

Hani and Her Music Performer, Singer, Entertainer. Hani: Touching. Dramatic. Whimsical. She’s been told she sounds like Barbra Streisand, and Judy Garland.

Brassy…

Hani teases her audience into a favorite song, and sighs scatter through the crowd as it is recognized. Or, she spins a tale about an unfamiliar song, sings it and holds her listener to the last note. Hani replies in that Bronx/Brooklyn twang, “maybe she [Streisand] sounds like me?!”

Growing up, Hani adored the music of Garland, Streisand and everything Broadway. If they sang it, she lik

ely sings it today. This Bronx New York kid was spoiled by the finest singers, best songs and greatest pianists (her favorite instrument). Her mom was a concert pianist. A painfully shy little girl, Hani studied classical voice for seven years, from her teens into her twenties. But it wasn’t until after marriage, divorce, and multiple careers, that she found that voice and blossomed into the musical artist she is today. She found that voice, singing cabaret-style since 2001. In 2016, Hani did 21 one-woman shows. She sings from a deep place, loving the lyric as much as the melody. Hani’s greatest gift is her intimate connection with her audience.

“Don’t Cry Out Loud.” “Alfie.” Two fabulous songs, don’t you think? They’ve become signature songs of mine. I was at The Velvet Note recently for their jazz jam. We took a group of Japanese guests to VN for the evening. Always a treat there. Amazing guy on the keys, my friend Arthur Turner is the anchor for their jams, backed up by some fabulous musicians. That night, Dwan Bosman was host, smooth sax player, with a personality to match. We had dinner, and were there about two hours. I did a show last year, in tribute to the head of this Japanese group, Hiroyasu Itoh. He wanted to hear me sing, and he wanted his group to hear me. I went over to Dwan and let him know I was a local singer and he said, “well, let’s get you up next!” I started this writing, naming the two songs I sang that night. Gosh do I love them. So did the audience! And the Japanese loved it. Great evening at Velvet Note. Check out their calendar and treat yourself.
