Introducing 🤎Graham Shelor🤎

Graham has been working with our dancers this season in classes, workshops, and rehearsals! Super excited to have him as a guest choreographer for “The Chrysalis” ✨

Graham Shelor (He/Him) is a movement artist, improviser, and dance educator based in Atlanta, Georgia. His dance training has formally developed through jazz, modern, ballet, contemporary, vogue femme and hip-hop forms/techniques. His work is mindful of transcending community boundaries and fostering radical interpersonal dialogue through active collaboration with diverse movement experiences. Graham received his B.A in dance from Middlebury College. He has performed in works for the Dance Company of Middlebury, Tori Lawrence + Co, Christal Brown, Laurel Jenkins, Lida Winfield, and Maia Sauer. Graham has choreographed works which been shown at Fall for Fall Dance Festival (GA), Middlebury College, the New England Conference of American College Dance Association (VT), and NewGrounds Dance Festival (FL). He was a recipient of the Alexander Twilight 1823 Diversity and Community Leadership Award and the Mahalingaiah Family Dance Prize, both awarded by Middlebury College, for his research and performance work on movement repression and liberatory dance pedagogy. Graham has shared his love for dance through teaching a wide variety of ages and abilities in studios and schools in Tampa, Middlebury, and Atlanta. Currently, Graham is a company member of ALA Dance. He is also a member of the Kiki House of Bodega, competing at balls in Atlanta and beyond in the beginners performance category.

Introducing 🤎Mya Butler🤎 LJDC Team Member and “The Chrysalis” Choreographer

Mya Butler is an artist, choreographer, student, and researcher that is passionate about the use of movement as a tangible means of expressing the internal and external connectivity of the human experience. She is a rising senior at Spelman College majoring in Comparative Women’s Studies and minoring in Dance Performance and Choreography. Mya has been a researcher and research mentor in the PFx Data Science and Girls That Code programs. As a researcher, her areas of study encompass women, historical movement practices, and the benefits of dance for physical, mental, and emotional health. Mya finds purpose in cultivating spaces that encourage her community to connect and collaboratively explore the unboundedness of dance for social change.

Jasmine Newsome is an educator, creator, and an artist that is passionate using dance as a vehicle to cultivate the mind, body, and soul connection. She uses intentionality and compassion to blend wellness and dance to create innovate approaches to life and art within any space. Jasmine finds purpose in advocating and educating for her community’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. She is radically changing the world by using her many talents to uplift and support others’ holistic wellness journeys.

✨The Lyrric Jackson Dance Company is proud to present “The Chrysalis,” a one-day gallery and performance art installation in collaboration with renowned visual artist, Kyoto Takeuchi .takeuchi.

Together, they will tell the story of five young caterpillars as they journey towards becoming butterflies. The dancers will explore themes of rebirth, renewal, and resplendent glory through their ethereal emergence and delicate precision.

The program features LJDC company dancers in new works by company artists Lyrric Jackson , Aryanna Allen , Jasmine Newsome , Victoria Woodward , and Mya Butler as well as guest artists Patsy Collins and Graham Shelor .crackers.
