Darling Nikki is a multi-volume anthology of poetry, essays, and visual art created in tribute to the enduring legacy of Nikki Giovanni—one of the most influential literary voices of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. For more than five decades, Giovanni’s work has shaped conversations about race, justice, love, community, and the transformative power of language.

This anthology gathers emerging and established writers and artists whose work reflects the intellectual, emotional, and creative impact of Giovanni’s life and career. The collection brings together a wide range of forms—including poetry, personal essays, experimental texts, and visual artwork—to celebrate the many ways Giovanni’s voice continues to inspire new generations of creators.

The project is conceived not only as a memorial tribute but also as an offering: a gathering of works that speak to the vitality of Giovanni’s legacy and the communities of writers, readers, and thinkers who have been shaped by her presence in American literature.

“When Nikki Giovanni got focused on Mojavi and his shoes...”

During the interview Nikki Giovanni spontaneously broke out into an impromptu, profound observation about Black men’s relationships with shoes, connecting it all the way back to the lack of shoes during enslavement. Jav Rux Mojavi’s sneaker shelf sparked a historical lesson from a master.

my Sunrise Scribe Tribe brother M.A. Dennis and i are working on a group piece that i would like to share with you. it is a work in progress that came about as a result of two events over 20 years apart that serendipitously came back around and created this piece of poetry. as I sit around having a wonderful gathering with family and friends afforded to us by the occasion of the Fourth of YouLie, I certainly see the irony, what some might call even contradiction. i see this as yet another way that we as Black people in America have found to turn what was meant against us to our favor. I saw a funny video earlier today where a sister talked about how Black people do but don’t celebrate Independence Day on the Fourth of July. we WILL barbecue we WILL shoot fireworks we WILL eat good food. i hold Juneteenth as our independence, i look at the Fourth of YouLie as a celebration of our defiance, survival and resilience!🙏🏾💗🦋

Red, White & Blues [2026 remix; work in progress]

AAFROQWEEN:
my country ‘tis of thee🎵🎶
but not really
MY red
hits different
the way our blood has been spilt
on this soil
which speaks to hardiness and valor
of a certain kind
if you wanna put that way and

DENNIS:

RED

too many red flags

AAFROQWEEN:

MY white
which they say
stand stands for
purity, innocence and high ideals
represents the even higher ideal
of redemption
by the true virtue of our liberation
from lies
masquerading as the founding principles
of this nation

DENNIS:

WHITE
Do not ask how i feel about kneeling
during the national anthem
or my opinion on the matter
of black lives because I spent
my morning in mourning, looking
at black & white photos
of public lynchings
of mutilated black bodies dangling
in front of pearly white smiles
beaming like a toothpaste commercial.

Vanna White
Wheel of (Mis)Fortune
Wheel of Lose A Turn
Wheel of (bankrupt) Money, Mississippi

until there’s enough
Birmingham jail letters
to say, “Pat, I’d like
to solve the puzzle.”

too much white
being worn after Labor Day
being worn down by labor
Force Day

AAFROQWEEN:

MY blue
sings a vigilance, perseverance, and justice remix
in the raspy raw tones of
Ma Rainey and Charlie Patton
i am the true American flag
with all the truth and meaning
this history deserves
sewn into every seam

DENNIS:

BLUE

Blues be
the Green Book scenic route
around the workplace watercooler
to avoid bovine manure

Blues be
a game of Hangman
using Mason-Dixon lines
to draw a stick figure

Blues
all my life
I had the blues (the blues)
I had to fight

forget liberty & happyness
I had to fight
for the pursuit
not to catch me

like dogs chasing Ancestors
the collection plate would hound me

the blues will make you resourceful

I was born under the blues
a bad sign called Cancer
so I’m overly sensitive

the blues
is a ring around life’s collar
an Apostle Paul thorn in the side
an improperly worn morality

inner city blues
brutality blues
red, white & blues
black & brown blues

pandemic blues
post-pandemic blues
post-Clinton Foundation Haiti blues
post-Crime Bill blues

disrespectful mouse blues
no consideration for others who want bread
instead of just nibbling on a slice
that sucka burrows through the whole loaf

diet blues (no bread, rice & pasta)
break up blues
my father’s disappearance blues
my family’s silence blues

MFA blues: a professor
turned blue when a student asked
what if Emily Dickinson
had Phylis Wheatley’s skin

skin-based humanitarian aid blues
some seekers receive asylum
others get treated crazy
make me wanna holler & throw up

double album blues – the blues
that make it hard to live in Dodge
that lead you to get the hell out

leadbelly blues
there’s no clues
to lead you
it’s innate

but it’s always been salmon swimming upstream
literally eating themselves for energy to migrate

🎶“My country, ’tis of
thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing…

DENNIS:
“And if America is to be a great
nation…”

AAFROQWEEN:
🎶Land of the pilgrims’ pride…

DENNIS:
“And if America is to be a great

DENNIS:
“And if America is to be a great
nation…” (even louder) …but i digress

AAFROQWEEN:
🎶 “You’re a grand ole’ flag…”

DENNIS:
i am a thing of beauty
who never should have been

AAFROQWEEN:
🎶“You’re a high flying flag…”

DENNIS:
a consequence of good versus evil
a symbol of liberty
that is not so sweet
but possesses the salty aftertaste
of injustice

AAFROQWEEN:
🎶”Lift every voice and sing…”

DENNIS:
i am the representation
of our need to reclaim

AAFROQWEEN:
🎶”Till earth and heaven ring…”

DENNIS:
all we lost
in the face
of all we cannot escape

AAFROQWEEN:
🎶”Ring with the harmonies of liberty…”

DENNIS:
and while i would love to be
a happy flag waving in jubilation

AAFROQWEEN:
🎶”Let it resound…”

DENNIS:
i will always be a reminder

AAFROQWEEN:
🎶”Let it resound…” (slightly louder)

DENNIS:
of a victory

AAFROQWEEN:
🎶”Let it resound…” (even louder)

DENNIS:
that sacrificed

AAFROQWEEN:
🎶”Loud as the rolling sea”

DENNIS:
too much
