The work depicts Proserpine (the Roman equivalent of Persephone), the goddess who was condemned to spend part of each year in the underworld after eating the seeds of a pomegranate. Rossetti portrays her standing in a shadowed corridor, holding the pomegranate that symbolizes both temptation and her eternal captivity. A narrow beam of light suggests the world above, emphasizing her longing for freedom.

The model for the painting was Jane Morris, Rossetti's long-time muse. Many scholars interpret the work as reflecting both the mythological story and Rossetti's own emotional attachment to Jane, whose unhappy marriage to William Morris echoed Proserpine's sense of confinement. "Buccaneer" is an oil on canvas painting by the British artist Albert Henry Collings (1868–1947), created in 1895. 🏴‍☠️ A buccaneer was a pirate or privateer who operated in the Caribbean Sea during the 17th and early 18th centuries, particularly around the Spanish colonies of the West Indies.

Collings was a prolific British painter best known for his portraits and figure subjects, working in oil, watercolour, and pastel throughout a career that spanned more than five decades. He exhibited extensively and became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1897. Buccaneer is among the artist’s notable works and achieved his auction record in 2018.
