Behind the scenes with Amy Sherald and AUC Art Collective

Students from the Atlanta University Center Art History + Curatorial Studies Collective joined us for a tour and discussion of Amy Sherald: American Sublime at the High. These students are studying to be future curators, art historians, museum professionals, and artists. Housed within Spelman College, this innovative program aims to shape the future of the art world and be an incubator of African American professionals in these fields.

How do museums preserve fragile works on paper for future generations? 🤔

In a recent post on the blog, Laurie Kind, Collections Digitization Coordinator, shares how the Sara Giles Moore Foundation initiative has helped document and digitize more than 5,000 works on paper, including prints, drawings, watercolors, and photographs from the museum’s collection.

The flash of red provided by this young girl's hat draws attention to her inquiring gaze. She holds a playfully oversized cup—a nod to Lewis Carroll's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865)—that gives the painting a slightly surreal feeling.

After more than a decade of dedicating herself to painting, Sherald gained national attention when this work won first prize in the 2016 Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. She was the first woman and the first African American to win the competition.
