This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we’re taking a closer look at “Genesis” by Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, American, 1940–2025) with Anni Pullagura, Margaret and Terry Stent Associate Curator of American Art, and Angelica Arbelaez, Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art.

In June 1999, Smith wrote a letter to High Museum of Art staff explaining the making of this painting. Here are a few of her reflections.

For our Centennial year, the High launched the LGBTQIA+ Photography Centennial Acquisition Initiative to expand our photography collection with work by LGBTQIA+ artists, so more visitors can see their stories reflected and discover new ones.

📦Find the UPS Truck | A custom UPS truck, wrapped in a design inspired by the High's permanent collection, is hiding somewhere on campus. Track it down and add your own touch to the bottom section with dry-erase markers.

🖍️I Spy themed chalk activation | Local chalk artist Jessi Queen traces a High x UPS–inspired design in chalk, then hands the imagination over to you. She'll bring the chalk and guide kids as they fill in the blanks.

"My art is the evidence of my freedom." —Thornton Dial

Thornton Dial was born on this day in 1928. His work, “Crossing Waters,” was recently reinstalled in our American art galleries. In this work, Dial confronted the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade through his complex manipulation of found materials. Remnants of white fencing enclose an aerial view of water, calling to mind the constraints of the Middle Passage. Dial conveyed the turbulence of water with the jarring splashes of color that also evoke feelings of anguish. Water serves as a metaphor within African-American traditions, often connecting troubling times to the promise of deliverance.
