Why are we choosing to say "Independence Season"?

The 4th of July marks the commemoration of the Declaration of Indepence, when the 13 colonies declared independence from the British. The freedom of independence was not equal for all Americans and we continue to struggle for equity today. That is why we choose to commemorate other landmarks of American history that are equally important.

Today we commemorate Juneteenth. Two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce the news of freedom.

Descriptions of images:
2 - Juneteenth Band, Austin Texas 1990. 3 - Celebrations in Richmond, Virginia ca. 1905.
4 - Juneteenth decorated carriage, Corpus Christi, Texas, 1913.

Requiem for the Homeless at the Cathedral of St Philip was truly one of the most moving experiences of the year.

Atlanta Voices provided the choral prelude to the service and sang works that reflected the challenges of being unhoused. We had the honor of hearing a personal testimony while we sang Reena Esmail's Take What You Need, and ended our set inviting the audience to sing an arrangement of Better Is One Day.

What an incredible first year season we have had!! In October, we had the honor of being invited as a performing choir at the Georgia Chapter Conference of the American Choral Directors Association. It was such a great way to kick off the season!

Being in the company of so many choral educators and choirs from across the state was a privilege. Our repertoire for this concert was some of our favorites: My Soul's Been Anchored by Moses Hogan, I Dream A World by Rosephanye Powell, and America Will Be! by Joel Thompson.
