We sat down with our Tank Stranger crew, Director Jamil Jude, Playwright James Ijames, and Dramaturg Johnathan McCrory, to talk about the origins of The Drinking Gourd, a national program focused on bringing resources to the development and production of work by Black playwrights.

James Ijames’ play, Tank Stranger, is the first work in the consortium to be produced, and we are SO excited about it.

The family is coming together, and we’re thrilled to introduce the incredible artists bringing the Stranger family to life.

Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright James Ijames and directed by Jamil Jude, Tank Stranger is a bold world premiere blending Afrofuturism, Black folklore, ancestry, mythology, and destiny. When generations of the Stranger family reunite, long-buried truths begin to surface, and Tank must discover where he belongs.

We can’t wait for you to meet this extraordinary cast and experience their stories onstage.

In the glow of a city after dark, Jitney carries voices through the streets, stories of fathers and sons, departures and returns, dreams that refuse to disappear.
