ATLANTA HORROR SOCIETY FILMMAKER OF THE MONTH

This month we're proud to spotlight local filmmaker James Mathis and his supernatural horror short, The Offering.

Like many horror fans, James grew up on the classics of the 70s and 80s, but one film has always stood above the rest: Halloween. What makes it his favorite isn't just the scares. It's the realism. Michael Myers wasn't a monster hiding in another world. He felt like someone who could be waiting around any corner, in any neighborhood. That simple, relentless terror left a lasting impression and continues to inspire James as a storyteller today.

Join us on June 25 as we screen The Offering, James's chilling tale of supernatural hunters, ancient evil, and a town hiding dark secrets. After the film, James will join us for a live Q&A to discuss filmmaking, horror, and the stories that inspire him.

We'll also celebrate one of James's favorite horror classics with a live audience commentary of The Gate (1987), plus the return of the Atlanta Horror Society Horror Trivia Championship.

The Gate and The Offering are two perfect examples of why we love horror.

One is a beloved 1980s cult classic that introduced a generation of fans to backyard demons, practical effects, and unforgettable nightmares. The other is a modern independent horror film proving that the spirit of genre filmmaking is alive and well in Georgia.

Join us as we screen our June Filmmaker of the Month selection, The Offering, followed by a live Q&A with filmmaker James Mathis. Then stick around for our Feature Commentary of the Month, The Gate (1987), directed by Tibor Takács.

During the commentary, we'll explore the film's incredible practical effects, behind-the-scenes secrets, creature designs, and why it remains one of the most influential gateway horror films ever made.

CHILDHOOD HORROR QUESTION OF THE DAY

What horror movie scared you the most as a kid?

Was it the nightmare-inducing clown from Poltergeist? The vampires of Fright Night? The creatures from The Gate? Maybe Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, or something that had absolutely no business being shown to a child.

Tell us the horror movie that kept you awake at night, made you sleep with the lights on, or had you checking under the bed before going to sleep.

We'll go first: The Gate still traumatized an entire generation with those tiny demonic creatures!
