🎉 On This Day in Carnival History

September 23, 1982: Trinidad & Tobago welcomed a future Calypso Queen; Terri Lyons. 👑🇹🇹 From capturing the National Calypso Monarch crown to dominating Montserrat’s Queen of Queens stage, Terri continues a powerful musical legacy while carving out one entirely her own.

Happy Birthday blessings to the Lioness, Terri Lyons! 🥳👑🎶
More life. More music. More history to come! ❤️🖤

60 YEARS AGO TODAY, PAN HIT THE STREETS OF NOTTING HILL. 🇹🇹🇬🇧🥁

On September 18, 1966, Trinidadian steelpan pioneer Russell Henderson and his band brought the sound of pan through the streets of Notting Hill.

What started as a local multicultural festival became part of the story of Notting Hill Carnival; one of the world’s most recognizable Caribbean celebrations.

One steelband. One procession. A legacy that still plays.

From Trinidad → London → the world. 🌎

🎭 This is our history. This is Carnival. There is a WEALTH of Caribbean history out there and we are here to share! Fete Dept. ON DUTY 🫡

Did you know this part of the story? 👀👇🏽

Some legends don’t just make music, they shape generations! 🇦🇬👑

Today, we honor King Swallow through the Caribbean elders who remember the music, the movement, and the moments he gave us. His contribution to calypso, soca, and Carnival helped pave the way for the culture we celebrate today.

And if you don’t know King Swallow… go ask your mama, daddy, granny, or grandpa. 😂🇦🇬They’ll probably tell you to sit down first because you clearly need a history lesson! But if you have FULL BLOWN Antiguan parents like me, Swallow’s music was definitely a regular in your household 🙏🏾

We fete because they built the road.
We remember because the music lives on. ❤️🌴
