🎉🎉CELEBRATING CARIBBEAN HERITAGE MONTH 🎉🎉

In celebration of Caribbean Heritage Month, we spotlight Marcus Garvey by Calvin Burnett.

This powerful work honors Marcus Garvey, the Jamaican-born activist, publisher, and founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association whose vision of Black pride, self-determination, and global unity inspired generations across the African diaspora.

Through Burnett’s masterful artistry, Garvey’s enduring legacy continues to spark reflection on identity, leadership, and the connections that unite communities across the Caribbean, Africa, and beyond.

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth. A day of reflection, remembrance, and recognition of the resilience, creativity, and contributions of Black Americans throughout history. At the Clark Atlanta University Art Museum, we honor the stories, artists, and cultural legacies that continue to shape our communities and inspire future generations.

As a museum dedicated to preserving and exhibiting works that document the role of African Americans in history and culture, we recognize the power of art as a tool for freedom, expression, and collective memory.

Happy Juneteenth from the Clark Atlanta University Art Museum. ❤️🖤💚

🌈 Happy Pride Month from the Clark Atlanta University Art Museum! 🌈

This June, we celebrate the contributions of LGBTQ+ artists whose creativity, courage, and vision have enriched the cultural landscape. Today, we honor Richmond Barthé, one of the most celebrated sculptors of the Harlem Renaissance.

Barthé’s work beautifully captured the strength, grace, and dignity of Black life, with many of his sculptures drawing inspiration from the beauty and expressive power of the Black male form. Through his artistry, he challenged prevailing narratives and created enduring representations of Black identity and humanity.

As we celebrate Pride Month, we recognize the importance of artists like Barthé whose lives and work continue to inspire conversations about creativity, identity, representation, and belonging.

This summer, the work continues beyond our walls. ☀️

Members of the Clark Atlanta University Art Museum team will travel to Washington, D.C. June 16–19 to participate in the History & Culture Access Consortium (HCAC) Convening hosted by the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture. The convening brings together HBCU museums, archives, and cultural heritage professionals committed to preserving, interpreting, and expanding access to Black history and culture.

As we learn, collaborate, and build new partnerships, we look forward to bringing fresh ideas and opportunities back to our campus community. Stay tuned to see how the museum is growing, connecting, and shaping the future of cultural stewardship this summer.

Favorite Artwork: Wild Flowers by June Hector 🌸

“I am particularly drawn to June Hector’s work because it captures flowers in bloom, symbolizing the start of spring. I love how pops of blue, yellow, and pink are woven throughout the piece, bringing a sense of vibrancy and warmth. To me, this artwork beautifully represents the stillness and peace found in nature.”
