UNIMA-USA Promoting International Friendship through the Art of Puppetry

UNIMA-USA is the North American Center of Union Internationale de la Marionnette, the oldest international theatre organization in the world, founded in 1929. The organization's mission is to promote international understanding and friendship through the art of puppetry. The organization's mission is to:
• link puppeteers nationally and internationally
• publish information on and for the field
• offer support and technical assistance for professional puppeteers through seminars, conferences, and symposia
• stimulate the general public's interest in the art of puppetry
• promote the visibility of American puppeteers all over the world
• promote the visibility of U.S. puppeteers all over the world, without distinction of race, politics, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender, national origin, or physical ability.

Let’s give a hand to this week’s Member Monday feature: Monkey Boys Productions! Founded in 2006 and located just outside of Philadelphia, Monkey Boys Productions is a two-time Emmy-nominated production company specializing in puppets, props, creatures, costumes, practical effects, and original content for film, television, and stage. Led by co-founders Marc Petrosino and Michael Latini, the company has created work for productions including Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Helpsters, and numerous Broadway productions. Their work on Helpsters earned the company two Emmy nominations for puppet design and fabrication. With backgrounds in puppetry, performance, design, and fabrication, Marc, Michael, and the Monkey Boys Productions team continue to bring outstanding character design and practical creations to productions around the world. We thank Monkey Boys Productions for their craftsmanship and contributions to puppetry and for being a valued member of UNIMA USA!

☕ Brunch with Bradshaw is back! ☕

This time we’re focusing on Jim Henson 🐸

Pop the kettle on and join us on Zoom as world-renowned shadow puppet master Richard Bradshaw OAM, UNIMA Australia Life Member, shares his stories and memories of working with Jim Henson. He’ll talk about his appearance on The Muppet Show and the hour-long documentary made about him for Jim Henson Presents The World of Puppetry.

Many of you will know Richard’s magical shadow puppets from ABC TV’s Play School, where his work was broadcast for over 30 years. He has also performed in over 25 countries across more than 50 years, and was Artistic Director of the Marionette Theatre of Australia from 1976 to 1983.

After our much-loved session on Bil Baird (one of Henson’s own early inspirations!), this is a rare chance to hear first-hand from someone who was there.

Been to ‘Make, Believe, Magic: The Worlds of The Jim Henson Company‘ exhibition at QAG & GOMA (QLD), or planning a visit? This is the perfect companion to the exhibition 🐸✨

Since 1982, UNIMA-USA has offered over 50 scholarships to underwrite professional puppetry training abroad for members of UNIMA-USA. Studying in different countries and experiencing different cultures encourages building bridges for international understanding between puppeteers from around the world, a major aim of all UNIMA Centers.

We’re pleased to announce that we’ve increased the scholarship amount to $2,000!

The Ballard Institute just installed a new exhibit, The Kinetic Life of the Puppet: Photography of Richard Termine, in the Mansfield Library Express in Downtown Storrs! Puppetry is a language of motion, and Termine’s striking photographs capture dynamic movement and energy in a still image.

Let’s give a hand to this week’s Member Monday feature: Elmwood Productions! Founded in 2001, Elmwood Productions creates puppet films for audiences of all ages, offering everything from family-friendly comedy to horror for grown-ups. Over the years, the company has explored a variety of genres and styles through feature films, short films, series, and more. Their work has reached audiences around the world, and they continue to create new stories and expand what puppet filmmaking can be. We thank Elmwood Productions for their creativity and dedication to puppet film and for being a valued member of UNIMA USA!

On Friday, November 6, the Ballard Institute will celebrate the opening of Larry Reed: Cinematic Shadows, the first major museum exhibition to celebrate the life and artistic legacy of Larry Reed (1944–2026).

Curated by ShadowLight Productions’ Farley Gwazda and Caryl Kientz in collaboration with the Ballard Institute, the exhibition explores Reed’s decades of experimentation, bringing together the traditions of Balinese wayang (shadow puppetry), contemporary theater, and the visual language of cinema.
