The opening title sequence from “Con Gái Ông Thứ Trưởng”, released in 1987, directed by Lam Sơn, screenplay by Lê Điệp, with film score by Y Vân.

The film is a satirical portrait of Vietnam’s subsidy-era society, where ambition, class, and human contradictions unfold through lavish wedding parties and the complexities of everyday life.

Much of what documentarians do never makes it to the screen. The research, the relationships, the years of tracing a full story so that what you present carries real weight. Some of what you see here is not in the film. But making a documentary means studying the whole picture, following the lineage, gathering everything needed to tell a story with depth and honesty.

What makes this work especially sacred is trust. Because of war and personal trauma, these relics, these letters, these photographs, are not easy to share. For the families who hold them, bringing these pieces forward takes courage. We never take that lightly.

When we watch a documentary, we see facts and stories. But for some people, that is their life.

A special thank you to my grand-aunt Minh Lâm (Y Vân’s second wife) for sharing this treasured envelope, and to grand-aunt Minh Hoan (Y Vân’s sister) and Tường Vi (her daughter) for sharing these rare family portraits.
