It's been some time since we've posted content to this page, as we've been working to determine how to provide more engaging content. Given the events of the past few weeks, we have felt compelled to start with our regular posts.

On June 7, 1979, President Jimmy Carter designated June as Black Music Month. In 2009, President Barack Obama declared it African-American Music Appreciation Month.

Our goal has always been to provide uplifting messages through our favorite Hip-Hop artists, and we would like your feedback on our posts, and the type of artists you would like us to highlight. Hip-Hop music has always been a part of us, and we hope the lyrics we share will motivate, heal, inspire, and rejuvenate you during these times.

This month, let us all take time to reflect on how Black Americans have shaped American music. Happy !

Today's BTLB Thursday Thought comes from Gucci Mane: "Growth is a decision!"

Remember, you can choose to go back toward safety or forward toward growth. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.

"We all trip but the way to survive,
Is hold your head and make sure you fall right/
And it's a quite fact, that whatever goes around comes right back/
It's just like that/
And we tryin to touch major paper/
Everybody in the struggle it gets greater later/
Never say can't, it's better to try/
And you can breathe long as you keep your head in the sky"/

Happy Wednesday! Today marks 12 years since the release of the American Gangster soundtrack (November 6, 2007). Like many of Jay-Z’s lyrics, there are either overt double entendres, or dual meanings in each of these bars.

"Own Boss, own your masters, slaves..."
These bars are riddled with dual meanings. On the surface, Hov is speaking about being your own boss and regaining control from your “owners”. Simultaneously, this is a message to artists about owning their master records or being slaves to the label (See: Prince). The word-play and concept is extended further by playing on the recording term “masters”. Additionally, this line is a direct reference to a conversation involving Frank Lucas in the movie “American Gangster”. In the referenced scene, Frank Lucas speaks about his mentor, Bumpy Johnson, being “rich, but not wealthy” because he didn’t own his own company. Frank wanted to change this, and be his own boss.

It's the first day of November 2019, and our Friday Motivation comes from the song "Humble Mumble", off of Outkast's 'Stankonia', which was released October 31, 2000.

The highlighted bars remind us life is unpredictable, full of ups and downs and twists, like a roller coaster. However, Big Boi reminds us the trials we go through will only make us stronger. Learning to navigate the challenges of life will lead to growth and eventually your success.

"I rock the microphone like a blizzard;
I'm so cold I'm tryin' to hold ya/
Life is like a great big roller coaster,
Everything in life don't always happen like it's supposed to/
Trials and tribulations make you stronger, live longer"/
